Pony swimmers dominate duals; finish second in Bozeman

The Havre High swim team dove back into competition following the Christmas break with an impressive showing in a triangular dual with the Great Falls schools on Friday and a strong showing at the Bozeman Invitational meet in Bozeman on Saturday.

On Friday, the boys won both duals handily defeating Great Falls High, 87-51 and CMR, 108-0. The Pony girls split their duals - defeating CMR, 98-48, but falling to Great Falls High, 94-48.

"It was just great to back in the water and race after the break," said Havre head coach Chris Inman. "The kids swam outstanding."

Individually, the boys had wins from Mario Pizzini in the 200 individual medley and 100 breastroke, Scott Robinson in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Chris Chandler and Ryan Gilbreath also picked up wins in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, respectively. Also picking up a win was the 200 freestyle relay team of Chandler, Gilbreath, Joey Howland and Scott Robinson.

For the girls, Gwen Porter placed first in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. Kasie Teske also had a solid meet for the girls finishing second in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle.

On Saturday, both the boys and girls finished second overall and first amongst the four Class A squads. The host Bozeman Hawks swept the team honors.

Individually, the boys were led by Robinson's second place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Pizzini finished third in the 100 breastroke as did Chandler in the 100 butterfly. The girls got a first place finish from its 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Rachel Hansen, Bethanie Keim, Porter and Teske. The squad of Hansen, Danielle Barton, Porter and Teske finished second in the 200 medley relay. Teske also had a solid meet adding a pair of second place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Porter also added second place finishes in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly while Keim and Brittne Zimmer finished second and third in the 400 freestyle.

The Ponies will hold their final home meet of the season on Saturday as they host Class A schools from around the state.
