Heberly earns Shrine game honors

Havre High wide receiver Steve Heberly was named to the 57th East-West Shrine Bowl all-star football game. Heberly, who broke several receiving records during his career with the Ponies, was named as a wide receiver for the East squad.

Heberly, who caught a school-record 48 passes this season for 942 yards while scoring seven touchdowns, was the only Havre player named to the starting roster. He will join Havre High head coach Troy Purcell on the squad. Purcell was named an assistant to coach to Great Falls High's Gregg Dart, who will be the head coach for the East.

Joining Heberly in the receiving corp for the East are Billings Senior's Brandon Hoskins and Conrad's Ross Judisch.

Two other Havre players earned alternate spots on the East squad. Quarterback Justin Kegel and defensive tackle Tyson Roe were named alternates and could still play in the game should a player at their position decide not to play.

Kegel's cousin, Brady Leaf of CMR, will share the quarterbacking duties with Billings Senior's Drew Hedrick. Kegel shared alternate honors with Class A state championship counterpart, Laurel's Jeff Fischer.

Roe is one of four defensive line alternates that include: Andy Mock of Glasgow, Clark Begger of Billings Skyview and Ben Hettich of Sidney.

Seventy-two players representing 42 high schools were selected for the Shrine Game.

Both squads will begin practicing for the game on July 10 with East holding its practices in Billings.

The game will be played July 19 at Memorial Stadium in Great Falls.
