ALONZO HARTWIG

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Alonzo H. Hartwig, 87, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, in his home in McMinnville.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kent Harrop officiating. Internment will be with private family.

Alonzo was born in Wymore, Neb., to Harm F. and Esta Williams Hartwig on Oct. 17, 1915. He was raised and schooled in Home, Kan., graduated from high school in Marysville, Kan., and was an Eagle Scout. He attended Linfield College and graduated from Emporia State Teachers College in Emporia. He received his master's degree from Northern Colorado University. During World War II he worked for Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita, Kan.

Alonzo married Jeanette on Aug. 9, 1940, in Glasgow, Mont. After World War II he settled in Havre, Mont., where he was the band director in Havre and several other small towns in Montana. He also taught music at Northern Montana College in Havre and was a piano tuner and technician. In 1988, he moved to McMinnville.

Alonzo was an avid reader, particularly anything to do with the Civil War. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Havre, where he was a deacon and trustee.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in McMinnville, member of the Masonic Lodge No. 3 A.F.A.M. in McMinnville, past grand commander of the Masonic Lodge, past chairman of the Community Concert Association in Havre, past city council member in Havre, and past state president of the American Baptist Church in Montana.

His family said he was a kind and gentle spirit who loved his family very much.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Hartwig of McMinnville, Ore.; sons, Paul Hartwig of Atlanta, and Rick Hartwig and Ronald Hartwig, both of Salem, Ore.; and daughter, Lonnette Prather of Aloha, Ore.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
