Rice organizes display of Havre natives on active duty

Mayor Bob Rice would like area residents to show their support for Havre natives who are on active duty in the military.

As more service men and women are being sent overseas as the United States gears up for war with Iraq, Rice said, he wants the community to let soldiers know that people in their hometown are supportive of their military careers.

Rice is organizing an exhibit, to be set up at Havre City Hall that will display photographs of local men and women who are on active duty in any branch of the U. S. military.

Rice said the display will be a showcase of pictures and short biographies.

In an effort to encourage citizens to communicate with local men and women in the armed forces, Rice said, the pictures will also include contact information for the soldiers, if possible.

"Having been in the military myself, I know how important it is to receive support from the home front," Rice said.

Rice added that he would like to see patriotism elevated once again, to the level it reached after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

"Flags were flying everywhere," Rice said. "Now it's kind of died down, and I'd like to see it happen again, especially now, when so many men and women are being sent overseas."

Families of service members are encouraged to contact Rice with information about relatives on active duty. Rice can be reached at 265-6710, or information and photographs - which will be returned - can be mailed to Rice at Havre City Hall, P.O. Box 231, Havre, MT, 59501.
