Big Sandy maintains hold atop 9C

The conference races in District 9C and District 2B girls high school basketball continued to take shape over the weekend. The Big Sandy Pioneers maintained their stranglehold on the 9C race, but the Blue Sky Eagles managed to keep pace and the Box Elder Bears are lurking in the race as well.

On Thursday night in Chester, the second-ranked Belt Huskies defeated the Chester Coyotes, 45-40. The Huskies held a 24-17 lead at the half and despite a Chester run in the third quarter, the Huskies were able to hold the Coyotes off.

Chester was paced in the loss by Keyla Wendlend's 13 points.

The Turner Tornadoes picked up a win on Thursday night by downing the Harlem JV team, 43-36. The Tornadoes got a team-high 17 points from Ashley VanVoast in the win while Harlem was led by Olivia Main's game-high 23 points.

On Friday night in Malta, the host M-Ettes thrashed the visiting Chinook Sugarbeeters, 54-29. The Beeters fell behind 12-6 after the first quarter and the M-Ettes then went on a 22-6 run in the second quarter to put away the Beeters at the half. Chinook got seven points from Tiffany Cuerth in the loss.

In District 9C action, the Big Sandy Pioneers continued to roll as they rocked the struggling J-I Rams, 74-40. The Pioneers outscored J-I, 41-18, in the first half and never looked back. Sheena Darlington led the way for the Pioneers with a game-high 30 points. Ashley Goodian chipped in with 13 points and Lindsay Danreuther added 12. The Pioneers (14-0) will travel to Rocky Boy on Friday night and will host Hays-Lodge Pole on Saturday.

In Gildford, the Blue Sky Eagles tried to keep pace with Big Sandy by routing KG, 43-29. The Eagles led 19-13 at the half and also outscored the KouGars 24-16 in the second half enroute to the win. The Eagles were led by Lindsay Anderson's 16 points in the win. The KouGars got 15 points from Cady Arifin.

In Box Elder, the host Bears hammered Rocky Boy, 80-39. The Bears raced out to a 31-point lead after one quarter and held the struggling Morning Stars scoreless in the first eight minutes of the contest. Box Elder got 28 points from Tami Infante and 18 points from Brandy Lawrence in the route. The Stars were paced by Shanna St. Pierre's 18 points in the loss.

The Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds also fell on Friday night, 59-52, to Roy. The T-Birds were paced in the loss by Clarissa Cohcran's 12 points while Suzi Kirkaldie added 11 points.

On Saturday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters' tough season continued with a 45-34 loss to the Cut Bank Wolves. In the loss, the Beeters got nine points from Brittany Buhmann and eight from Whitney Lybeck.

The Beeters, 3-10 overall and 2-6 in District 2B play, will host Harlem on Thursday night and Glasgow on Saturday. The game on Saturday will be parents night in Chinook.

In Harlem, the Lady Wildcats continued to struggle as they were downed by the Poplar Indians, 76-61. The Wildcats got 11 points from Olivia Main and 10 points apiece from Megan Walls and Trista Doney in the loss. Harlem (2-12) will travel to Chinook on Thursday and Plentywood on Friday and will return home to host Rocky Boy on Saturday.

In Dodson on Saturday night, the Box Elder Bears picked up a key win over Dodson, 64-45. The Bears were paced by Tami Infante's game-high 27 points. Rebecca Eaglemen also had 11 points in the win. The Bears (9-5) will travel to Belt tonight and will host Blue Sky on Friday night.

In Rudyard, the Blue Sky Eagles drubbed the J-I Rams, 65-28. The Eagles raced out to a 24-7 first quarter lead and never looked back. Blue Sky got 15 points from Natalie Strissell and 14 from Lindsay Anderson in the win. J-I was paced by Megan Herdina's 9 points.

Blue Sky (12-2) will visit Box Elder on Friday night and will host Chester on Saturday. The Rams (0-15) will travel to Valier on Saturday.

In Sunburst, the KG KouGars were routed by the host Refiners, 67-49. In the loss, the KouGars got a game-high 24 points from Cady Arifin. KG (4-10) will travel to Chester on Friday night and will host Turner on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, the Turner Tornadoes grabbed their second victory of the weekend by defeating the Rocky Boy Morning Stars, 44-41. Turner and Rocky Boy were tied 19-19 at the half, but the Tornadoes used a 14-6 run in the third quarter to gain the advantage. Turner got 15 points from Kelsey Kilndsworth in the win. The Stars were paced by Marti Stiffarm's 10 points.

Turner (8-6) will host Hays-Lodge Pole on Friday night and will travel to KG on Saturday. Rocky Boy is now 1-13 on the season.

The Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds also fell on Saturday night to Whitewater, 50-46. In the loss, the T-Birds got 14 points from Collette Hawley and also got 13 points from Vanessa Webb. The Thunderbirds are now 5-9 overall this season.

In District 10C action, the Chester Coyotes grabbed a 51-42 win over the Heart Butte Warriors. The Coyotes were led in the win by Keyla Wendland's 13 points while Courtney Fraser added 11 points. Chester (7-7) will visit KG on Thursday night and Blue Sky on Saturday.
