KG upsets Blue Sky; Bears win two

It is getting down to that time where each game is critical in high school boys basketball. There is perhaps no place that it can be felt more than on the Hi-Line as action really heated up this weekend in District 9C and 10C action.

On Thursday night, the Turner Tornadoes started their week off on a positive note as they defeated the Harlem junior varsity team, 59-48, in Turner. The Tornadoes were paced by Evan Hauge's 18 points and also got balanced scoring behind 14 points apiece from Clancy Kegel and Robert VanVoast. Brandon Simons also chipped in with 11 points in the win. The Wildcats were led by Wes Main's game-high 23 points while Keenan Fetter added 13 points.

On Friday night in District 2B action, the Harlem Wildcats pushed their winning streak to 11 games as they routed the Chinook Sugarbeeters, 86-50, in Harlem. The Wildcats grabbed a 43-22 halftime lead and used a 24-9 edge in the third period to put away the struggling Beeters. Harlem got a game-high 17 points from both Ben Carrywater and Jim Kennedy. Chris Cole added 16 points and Colby Fetter chipped in with 10. The Beeters were paced by Adam Hayes' 13 points while Matt Roseberry added 10 points in the loss.

The Wildcats, 12-1 overall and 8-0 in 2B play, will travel to Glasgow on Thursday night for a showdown with the Scotties, who are just a single game behind Harlem in the conference standings. They will return home to host Plentywood on Friday night and Rocky Boy on Saturday.

In Rudyard in Distict 9C action, the KG KouGars pulled off a huge upset, knocking off the Blue Sky Eagles, 70-45. With the game tied at 15 after the first quarter, the KouGars went on a 22-2 run in the second quarter. Despite a fourth quarter run by the Eagles,the KouGars were able to maintain their 25-point win.

The KouGars got 14 points from Richie Melby and 13 points apiece from Casey Crites, Luke Antonich and Thomas Marshall in the win. Tyler Kapperud also chipped in with 10 points. The Eagles were paced by Mitch Mckinley's 14 points in the losing effort.

Meanwhile, the Big Sandy Pioneers were able to make up some ground with Blue Sky's loss by grabbing a one-point, 56-55, win over the host J-I Rams in Joplin. The Pioneers held a comfortable 28-18 lead at the halftime. The Rams rallied to outscore the Pioneers, 37-28, in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overtake the Pioneers in the last minutes of the contest.

Big Sandy got 21 points from Gage Brumwell and 14 from Jay Jamieson in the win. Mason Ophus chipped in with 11 points. The Rams were led by Zach Ramberg's 19 points. Justin Johnson and Josh Lincoln chipped in with 11 points apiece in the loss.

In Box Elder, the Box Elder Bears continued to maintain control of the 9C standings with a 100-55 thrashing of rival Rocky Boy. The Bears raced out to a 36-16 first-quarter lead and the Stars never threatened in the remainder of the contest. The Bears got a game-high 19 points from Marcus Standing Rock and had five other players in double figures on the night. Tim Rosette and Charlie Swan added 13 points in the win. The Stars were paced by Garrett Demontiney with 14 points while A.J. The Boy and Jesse Colliflower added 12 apiece.

The Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds also picked up a win on Friday night with an 80-67 pounding of Roy. The T-Birds got 23 points from Trevor Boushie and 22 from Nathan Martin enroute to the win.

In Belt, the Chester Coyotes season suffered a minor setback by falling to the host Belt Huskies, 85-61, on Friday night. The Huskies used a 27-11 run in the second quarter to pull away from Chester. The Coyotes got 19 points apiece from Adam Stubbs and Travis VanDyke in the losing effort.

On Saturday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters' tough season continued as they were thrashed by the top-ranked Cut Bank Wolves, 74-36. The Beeters got 10 points apiece from Matt Roseberry and Casey Schmitt in the loss. Chinook's record fell to 3-11 on the season and 2-7 in District 2B play.

In District 9C action on Saturday, the Blue Sky Eagles were able to bounce back from their loss to KG with a 57-54 win over J-I. The Rams held a 29-22 lead at intermission, but the Eagles stormed back by outscoring the Rams, 35-25, in the final 16 minutes of the game. The Eagles got 14 points from Jon Lipp while Mitch McKinley chipped in with 12 points. The Rams were led by Zach Ramberg's game-high 21 points in the loss.

Blue Sky (11-3) will visit the Box Elder Bears on Friday night and will host Chester on Saturday night. The Rams (7-8) will travel to Valier on Saturday.

In Sunburst, the KG KouGars picked up their second straight win by downing the host Refiners, 88-35. The Kougars outscored Sunburst 28-6 in the first quarter and 30-6 in the third quarter enroute to the easy win. KG got 25 points from Casey Crites while Luke Antonich added 15 points in the win.

The KouGars (7-7) will visit Chester on Thursday night and will host Turner on Saturday night.

The Turner Tornadoes also picked up another 9C win Saturday night as they defeated the struggling Rocky Boy Stars, 58-42. Turner was paced by Clancy Kegel's 18 points and Evan Hauge added 13 points in the win. The Stars got eight points from Jessie Colliflower in the loss. Turner (8-6) will host Hays-Lodge Pole on Thursday night and visit KG on Saturday night. Meanwhile, the Stars record fell to 1-13 on the season.

In Hays, the host Thunderbirds picked up another victory over Whitewater, 75-59. The T-Birds were paced by Nathan Martin's game-high 20 points. Hays-Lodgepole is now 9-5 on the season and tied for third in the 9C standings.

The Box Elder Bears also grabbed a win on Saturday night over Dodson, 73-46. The Bears (12-2) will travel to Belt tonight and will host Blue Sky on Friday night.

In District 10C action, the Chester Coyotes rebounded from their loss to Belt with a 75-50 win over the Heart Butte Warriors in Heart Butte. The Coyotes got 21 points from Travis VanDyke and 17 from Adam Stubbs. The Coyotes (10-4) will host KG on Friday night and visit Blue Sky on Saturday.
