Pony girls face streaking Browning squad, host Malta

Tonight, the Havre High girls basketball team will travel to Browning to try get back a win that slipped away a month ago. On Saturday night, the Ponies will host a team that they surprised last month in the Malta M-Ettes.

On Jan. 3 in Havre, the Ponies fell behind by as many as twenty-five points against the Indians. However, Havre managed a furious fourth quarter comeback and had several chances to win the game in the final seconds, but ultimately came up short, losing 50-47. It was tough loss for the Ponies and one that hasn't been forgotten.

"That game was probably the best we've played when we have fallen behind," said Havre head coach Dennis Murphy. "We just can't have a start like that against anybody."

The Ponies bring a 6-8 record into the weekend and are currently tied with Belgrade for fifth place in the Central a conference standings. Meanwhile, the Indians are riding a 12-game winning streak and are 12-2 on the season. They are ranked fourth in the most recent Class A power poll and are sitting alone in second place in the Central A standings.

It doesn't get any easier on Saturday as Havre welcomes one of its biggest rivals in District 2B powerhouse Malta.

In the previous matchup, the Ponies used a box-and-one defense on Malta star Jolene Fuzesy, who scored just three of her 22 points after Havre made the defensive switch.

"Fuzesy is the type of player you just have to control in order to have success," Murphy said. "I thought our team defense as a whole was the biggest factor in beating them the first time as well as the job we did on her (Fuzesy) after she got hot."

Friday night's contest between Havre and Browning is slated to tip off at 7:30 p.m. in Browning. Saturday's game at the HHS gymnasium between Havre and Malta is also scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. and can be heard on 610 KOJM-AM.
