Harlem runs win streak to 12 games

Upsets and dramatic finishes highlighted this past weekend across the Hi-Line. The Harlem Wildcats survived a huge scare from Glasgow, and there were several upsets in District 9C action as the season winds down.

On Thursday night in Glasgow, the Harlem Wildcats sank a last-second shot to pull out a one-point victory over the fourth-ranked Glasgow Scotties, 51-50. The last-second win kept Harlem's 12-game winning streak alive. The Scotties led 30-28 as halftime after a 19-7 second-quarter run gave them the lead. However, the Wildcats outscored Glasgow 23-20 in the final 16 minutes, including the game's final basket.

Harlem was led by Chris Cole's 15 points. Jim Kennedy added 14 points and Colby Fetter added 13 points in the win.

On Friday night, the Wildcats continued to roll as they edged out the Plentywood Wildcats, 76-72, in Harlem. Harlem held a 44-30 lead halftime, but Plentywood climbed back into the contest with a 22-8 run in the third quarter to make the contest close.

In the win, Harlem got 16 points apiece from Cole and Kennedy. Fetter chipped in with 15 points while Hank Brockie and Ben Carrywater added 12 points apiece in the win.

In Glasgow, the host Scotties rebounded from their loss to Harlem by pounding Chinook, 89-39. The Scotties roared to a 41-16 at halftime and also scored another 48 points in the final sixteen minutes en route to the easy win. Chinook got 18 points from Casey Schmitt in the losing effort.

The Beeters, 3-12 on the season, will host Havre tonight for senior night. They will travel to Poplar and Fort Benton this weekend.

In District 9C action, the Box Elder Bears wrapped up the regular season championship with a 61-58 win over the Blue Sky Eagles in Box Elder. The Eagles used a 15-11 run in the second quarter to take a 30-29 lead at halftime. The Bears then outscored Blue Sky 32-28 in the second half to grab the tight three-point win.

Box Elder was led by the duo of Tim Rossette and Dustin Sunchild who scored 14 points apiece. Neal Rossette added 12 in the win. The Eagles got 13 points from Keenan Toner and 12 from Mitch McKinley in the losing effort.

Box Elder (14-2) will visit Hays-Lodge Pole on Friday night and will host Turner on Saturday in the last weekend of the regular season.

In Gildford, the KG KouGars pulled off an upset over District 10C Chester, 69-67, in double overtime. Both the KouGars and Chester had a a chance at the end of regulation to win the contest but both missed those opportunities. Chester also missed a shot in the first overtime that would have won the game. In the second overtime, the KouGars went ahead by two with just five seconds remaining and the Coyotes failed to convert a final three-point attempt.

KG got 20 points from Richie Melby and 19 from Casey Crites. The Coyotes were led by Travis VanDyke's 18 points while Mitch Violette added 17 points in the losing effort.

The Big Sandy Pioneers hammered the host Stars, 87-53, in Rocky Boy. The Pioneers jumped all over Rocky Boy from the start of the game as they scored 47 first-half points. The Pioneers were led by Jay Jamieson's 30 points while Gage Brumwell chipped in with 18 points. The Stars got 14 points from Garrett Demontiney and 11 from A.J. The Boy in the loss.

The Turner Tornados picked up a critical 9C upset victory over the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds, 61-53, in Turner. Turner grabbed a 40-25 halftime lead and then held the T-Birds off in the second half to preserve the win. The Tornados were led by Clancy Kegel's game-high 22 points while Evan Hauge added 17 points. The T-Birds got 19 from Robyn Doney in the losing effort.

On Saturday night, the Harlem Wildcats pushed their winning streak to 12 games with a 90-48 drubbing of Rocky Boy in Harlem. The Wildcats were paced by Chris Cole's game-high 28 points. Hank Brockie also had 19 points in the win. Rocky Boy got 15 points from Jessie Colliflower and 11 points form Upton Whitford in the losing effort.

Harlem, 15-1 overall this season and 10-0 in District 2B play, they will host the Wolf Point Wolves on Friday night and host the Malta Mustangs on Saturday night for senior night. Meanwhile, Rocky Boy's record fell to 1-15 overall.

In Gildford, the KG KouGars grabbed another big 9C win by defeating the Turner Tornados, 54-46. KG had a 41-32 lead after three quarters of action and then held off Turner in the final eight minutes. The KouGars were led by Casey Crites' 16 points. Thomas Marshall and Tyler Kapperud added 11 points apiece in the win. Turner got a game-high 18 points from Clancy Kegel in the losing effort.

The weekend sweep pushes KG's record to 9-7 on the season. Their final two games will be at Big Sandy on Friday night and they will return home to host Rocky Boy on Saturday. Turner, 9-7 overall, will host Blue Sky tonight and visit Box Elder on Saturday.

In Rudyard, the Chester Coyotes bounced back from their loss to KG with a 57-50 victory over the host Blue Sky Eagles. The Coyotes jumped out to a 19-9 first quarter lead and held a 36-21 lead at intermission. The Eagles used a 20-9 run in the third quarter to make the contest close but could never get within five points. Chester was paced by Adam Stubbs' 17 points. They also got 11 from Travis VanDyke and 10 from Doug Anderson. Blue Sky got 15 points from Jon Lipp and 11 from Mitch McKinley in the loss.

Chester (11-5) will host J-I on Friday night and Sunburst on Saturday. The Eagles (11-5) will travel to Turner tonight and return home to face Rocky Boy on Friday night.

In Big Sandy, the host Pioneers took over second place in District 9C with a 87-48 route of Hays-Lodge Pole. The Pioneers were paced by a game-high 28 points from Gage Brumwell. Jay Jamieson also had 23 points on the night. The T-Birds were led by Trevor Boushie's 11 points.

Big Sandy (11-5) will host KG on Friday night and travel to Geraldine on Saturday night. With two losses this weekend, the Thunderbirds' record falls to 9-7 overall.

Also on Saturday night, the J-I Rams fell to the Valier Panthers, 77-76, in District 10C action. The Panthers raced out to a 49-28 halftime lead. J-I then used a 30-11 run in the third quarter to get back in the contest, but they could not overtake Valier in the final minute of the game. In the loss, J-I got 31 points from Justin Johnson and 12 points from Matt Tempel.

The Rams (7-9) will host Chester on Thursday night and travel to Heart Butte on Saturday night.
