The Havre school board will ask voters in May to approve levies to pay for building improvements.
The board wants $555,000 for a new heating and ventilation system at Lincoln-McKinley school. It will ask property owners in the Havre elementary district to approve a $185,000 levy for three years to pay for the project.
The board also wants $740,000 for three projects for the high school. The money would be used for putting new insulation and windows on Havre High School, replacing the seats in the high school auditorium, and doing some renovation at Blue Pony Stadium, including replacing the bleachers.
Superintendent Kirk Miller said the auditorium seats are about 40 years old. They've been rebolted to the floor so many times that some seats can't be attached to the floor any longer.
The plank seating at the stadium is at least 50 years old and needs to be replaced for safety reasons, he said.
The board will ask voters in the high school district to approve of levy of $185,000 for each of four years.
Board chairman Jim Heberly said he is confident the voters in the district will continue to support the district's building reserve fund, as they have for many years.
"They realize we have a lot of buildings," Heberly said. "You've got to maintain them or else they'll fall down."
Miller said the levies would be a small increase over the building reserve levies that were completed this year.
The elementary levy would be $35,000 a year more than the levy that was used to replace the heating and ventilation system at Sunnyside school.
The high school levy would be $20,000 a year more than the levy assessed to replace the roof at the high school.
The taxes collected can only be used for the projects specified by the board.
