Skylights pick up much needed win, finish third

The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team needed a win this past weekend to at least tie for third place in the Frontier Conference final standings. Despite being bruised and little beat up, the Skylights came through on Saturday, defeating the Westminster College Griffins, 70-66, in Salt Lake City.

The Skylights got 17 points from Lindsey Buehler off the bench to edge the Griffins and clinch a tie with Rocky Mountain College for third place.

Buehler did much of her damage from the free-throw line, making 7-10, while shooting 5-6 from the field.

Besides Buehler, Northern got 12 points from Khadiga Mohamed and 10 from Brettney Vermandel in the win. The trio of post players was effective enough to get Westminster's post players into foul trouble.

The Griffins got 24 points and nine rebounds from Rebekah Steenblik before she fouled out. Jessica Richter added 14 and Rachel Robbins chipped in with 12 points in the loss.

Northern will host either Montana Tech or Carroll College on Friday in the first round of the Frontier Conference playoffs.
