Heberly commits to run track for Bobcats

Havre High School senior Steve Heberly has recently signed an NCAA Division I national letter of intent to run track and field for the Montana State University Bobcats beginning next fall in Bozeman.

Heberly, who is a four-sport standout, will run the 55, 100 and 200 meter sprints for the Bobcats next season and is looking forward to the tough challenges that lie ahead.

"There will be a lot of good competition at that level," Heberly said. "I am really looking forward to all of the great challenges I will have at Bozeman."

Heberly is also looking forward to academic challenges at Bozeman as well. He will major in computer engineering and says that education was the biggest factor in deciding to run track for the Cats.

"They just built a huge new engineering facility there and it is state of the art and their engineering program is excellent," Heberly said. "I also really like (track) coach Dale Kennedy and the rest of the coaches because they put education first before sports and that is really important to me."

Even though school will come first for Heberly in Bozeman, he brings quite an athletic resume as well.

Heberly, who is widely considered one the fastest high school athletes in the state of Montana, is the two-time defending Class A state champion in both the 100 and 200 meters. He has also anchored Havre's two-time state championship 400 meter relay team. In addition to his track and field prowess, Heberly is a two-time first-team Class A all-state wide receiver in football and was named to the 2003 East-West Shrine Game this summer in Great Falls. He has also started at point guard the last two seasons on the Blue Pony varsity basketball team as well as being a standout baseball player for the Havre North Stars.

Even though Heberly has excelled in many athletics in his three-plus years of high school, he knows that track and field is where he is ready to make his mark at the collegiate level.

"I definitely feel like Bozeman and my decision to run track was the right thing for me," Heberly said. "I am really looking forward to going to school in Bozeman and meeting all of the challenges that will come my way."
