Tonight's the night for taxes

People who have waited to the last minute to mail their tax returns can still slip them into the mail through this evening and get the necessary April 15 postmark.

Havre postmaster Rich O'Leary said returns dropped off at the post office up to 8 p.m. will be postmarked today. The post office windows will be staffed to 5:30 p.m.

Some mailboxes in Havre have a 5 p.m. pickup and that mail will receive today's postmark. Other boxes around town have varying collection times, O'Leary said.

The postmaster said he expects a last-minute rush, "but we have the people available." Dietra Kraske, owner of the H&R Block franchise in Havre, said people can get an extension, which gives them up to four months to file. It is helpful for people expecting a refund who aren't ready to file, but people who owe taxes must pay any estimated amount due when filing the extension.

The extension forms are available at locations where tax forms are distributed and can be downloaded at the Internal Revenue Service's Web site.

An extension can be mailed, filed over the phone or done through the IRS's e-file system on the Internet.
