Comets open season with 1-3 finish at Eureka tournament

The Havre Comets opened their season with a 1-3 showing at the Eureka baseball tournament this past weekend.

The Comets opened the tourney with a 10-7 loss to Eureka on Saturday afternoon. Eureka broke open a 6-6 game in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring four runs on three hits, a walk and a hit batsmen. Havre tried to rally pushing a run across in the sixth inning but came up short.

Mike Olson led the Comets with a pair of doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. Trent Normandy added an RBI double in the loss. Jeff Tibbals took the loss on the mound in relief of Normandy.

The Comets shook off the loss to pick up a 5-3 win over the Glacier Twins Saturday night. Havre had just four hits in the contest, but still managed to hold off the Twins.

The Comets broke open a 3-3 game in the sixth inning with a pair of runs to take the lead.

Jordon Patterson led Havre picking up two of the Comets four hits including a double and an RBI single. Tibbals added another hit and scored a pair of runs. Ben Erickson picked up the win in relief of Chase Castloo, who pitched solidly for the first five innings.

Sunday wasn't as kind to the Comets as they were handed a pair of tough losses at the hands of the Libby Loggers and Kalispell Lakers.

Libby pounded out 14 runs on seven hits and was aided by five Havre errors en route to a 14-0 win over the Comets on Sunday morning.

While the Libby bats were red hot, the Comet bats were frigid as Nate Herbig of Libby no-hit Havre in the five inning game. Brandon Morse took the loss for the Comets.

Later on Sunday, the Comets were beaten 14-4 by the Kalispell Lakers to end the tournament. The Lakers drummed out nine hits while the Comets committed five costly errors in the game.

Bret Magelssen picked up the loss for the Comets. Tibbals had another good game at the lead-off spot picking up a double and scoring a pair of runs. Tony Christian also went 1-3 with a pair of runs scored.

The Comets will be in action on Saturday when the take on the Great Falls Stallions 'A' squad at 3 p.m. in one seven inning game.
