HHS track teams sweep Fergus Invite

On the final weekend of the regular season, the Havre High track team showed why it is poised for great things in the coming weeks of the 2003 Class A high school track and field postseason.

Both the Pony boys and girls teams garnered first-place honors Saturday at the Fergus Invitational at the Fergus County Sports Complex in Lewistown.

The Havre High boys team captured first place with 112.5 team points while Fort Benton finished a close second at 107 points. Conrad and Fairfield finished in a distant tie for third.

Leading the way for the Ponies were a pair of outstanding individual performances from Scott Robinson and Anthony Bonavita.

Robinson captured the 800-meter title with a time of 51.92 and finished in third place in the 400 meters. Robinson also captured a second-place finish in the javelin with a final throw of 153-7.

Bonavita scored for the Ponies in the high jump and the hurdles. He finished in second place in the high jump with a final leap of 6-2 and finished in fourth place in the 300-meter hurdles and sixth in the 110 hurdles.

"Anthony Bonavita really came alive this weekend," said Havre High head coach John Ita. "He looked great in the high jump and he is really starting to show a lot of improvement in the hurdles, which will be really good for us at the divisional meet.

"Scott Robinson also really performed well," Ita added. "He is scoring points all over the place for us right now."

The Ponies also scored well in the distances and the sprints, despite an off day from star sprinter Steve Heberly.

Heberly captured the 100 meters as expected, but did not compete in the 200 and finished in second place in the 400 meters.

"I think Steve's legs are tired right now," Ita said. "He put a lot of effort into the Whitefish meet and the Top 10 meet, so this week of rest will be really good for him."

In the girls meet, the Havre High team kept its winning streak alive by holding off the host Lewistown Eagles, 103.5 to 100. Malta finished in a distant third with 85 team points.

'The great thing about the girls team on Saturday was the performance of our young kids," Ita said. "Our top girls scored a good number of points, but we got some outstanding performances from some of our junior varsity girls that really pushed our point total up."

Two areas where the Ponies got those extra points came from the 200 meters and high jump. In the 200, Havre got a sixth-place finish from Kelsey West, while Keelie Brandt finished fifth in the high jump.

The performance from the younger kids was equally important, as one of the girls team's top scorers, Kelsey Smith, sat out the meet with an ankle injury.

Havre garnered first-place honors in the 100-meter dash with Rylee O'Connell's winning time of 13.09.

Alicia Overcast and Brooke Schwan also turned in big days for the Ponies. Overcast captured both the 400 meters and the 300 hurdles, while Schwan captured the 100 hurdles and finished second in the high jump. Those three also contributed heavily in both of Havre's winning relay teams in the 400- and 1,600-meter relay.

"Our girls really stepped up and performed well at this meet," Ita said. "We said before the meet that this would be the last opportunity for kids to show the coaches what they can do before the divisional meet. I think that is why we saw so many outstanding performance from athletes all over the place.

"In all, Saturday was a good day for both teams," Ita added. "We performed well, got a victory and made it through without any major injuries."

The Ponies will have an entire week off to rest and then they will begin to prepare for the Central A divisional meet, which takes place May 16-17 in Havre.
