MSU-N rodeo team places three

The Montana State University-Northern rodeo team capped a successful weekend in Missoula at the muddy and rain drenched Big Sky Regional Finals.

Junior saddle bronc rider Doug Kallenberger won the saddle bronc and advanced to the Championship Series "Chute Out" in Bozeman on May 28-31, as well as a bye to the College National Rodeo Finals in Casper, Wyo. on June 8-14.

Kallenberger, a former Havre High standout, scored 577.5 points with his next closest competitor scoring 522.5 points.

Senior Jaley Wacker of Roundup shook off an early season slump to place second in breakaway roping. Wacker scored 310 points and moved from sixth place in the standings to second place in the standings on the weekend. She also receives and invitation to the "Chute out" and a bye to the CNFR.

Junior bareback rider Dale Stoller of Great Falls finished third in the bareback with 445 points. Stoller, who missed to two rodes earlier this season, missed out on the automatic bye to the CNFR by five points. Stoller still advances to the "Chute Out" where he will try and qualify for the CNFR.

"I was really happy with our performance especially considering the weather," said rodeo coach Julie Strauser. "The mud and rain were pretty bad. We're really starting to come along as a team."

Northern also had four members of its team earn academic all-conference honors. Sophomores Jesse Simonsen of Whitewater and Ashley Buck of Chinook were joined by freshmen Rylee Strauser of Chinook and Laceen Ophus of Big Sandy on the all-academic team.
