KG boys, Blue Sky girls take 9C titles

The cold and wind that returned to Havre did not stop the KG boys and Blue Sky girls track teams from dominating the District 9C track and field championships held on Wednesday at the Havre Middle School track.

The KouGar boys team scored 219 points to take first place honors, while the Blue Sky Eagles finished in a distant second with 152 points. Big Sandy finished in third place with 69 points. KG's boys performance definitely pleased KG head coach Butch Marshall.

"Things went just about like I expected," Marshall said. "The kids came out and performed really well and I think that we got every body to divisionals that we thought would make it."

As expected, KG senior Casey Crites dominated the competition. Crites captured both the 100 and 200 meters, as well as the high jump and long jump competition. Crites finished off the sprints with a win in the 400 meters as well.

The KouGars also got a pair of championships from Thomas Marshall in the hurdles. The senior captured both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Marshall capped off his day by finishing first in the triple jump as well.

In the relays, the KouGars were equally as dominant as they captured both the 400 and 1,600 meter relay titles. In the 400 relay, the KouGars 'winning team consisted of Luke Antonich, Tyler Kapperud, Richie Melby and Marshall. The winning 1,600 meter team featured Kapperud, Melby, Antonich, and Cody Donovan.

The boys distance races featured a win by Blue Sky's Eric Groth in the 800 meters while Big Sandy's Adam Butler dominated both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter events.

The throwing events featured the KouGar's Forest Letang and Jerrad Gomke finishing first and second respectively in the shot put, while Mason Ophus of Big Sandy once again dominated the discus competition. Blue Sky's Keenan Toner captured the javelin competition and the KouGar's Luke Antonich finished the day off with a win in the pole vault.

"We had some really nice performances like Darby Donovan in the javelin," Marshall said. "But the most important thing is that the kids performed well and we got through the day without any injuries."

The girls meet could be summed up as total domination by the Blue Sky Eagles. The Eagles scored an astounding 258 points en route to the district title. KG finished in a very distant second place with 102 points and Turner brought home third place honors with 36 total points.

"The girls meet also went as expected," Marshall said. "Blue Sky scored points all over the place. But I think our girls really stepped up and performed well in some key areas and I was really pleased with our results."

In the sprints, the Eagles got a first place in the 100 meters from Maia Aageson. From there, the meet turned into the Kaila Warren show. Warren scored 48 individual points by winning four events on the day. Warren captured the 200 and 400 meter races as well as the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. In both hurdle events, Warren's teammate, Lindsay Anderson, finished second.

The Eagles also captured both relays, as only KG had another team entered. In the short relay, the winning Blue Sky team consisted of Ashley Gatzemeier, Heather Haas, Kim Patrick and Maia Aageson. The long relay team consisted of Kile Patrick, Aageson, Haas and Gatzemeier.

The distance races also went the way of Blue Sky. Kile Patrick captured both the 800 and 1,600 meters while Big Sandy's Ashley Goodian dominated her specialty, the 3,200 meter race.

In the jumps, Jessica Patrick captured the high jump and also won the discus, while Anderson took home first place honors in the long jump. KG's Cady Arifin got the KouGars on the medal stand with a win in the triple jump. The KouGar's star thrower, Kim Berg, also completed her 9C dominance on Wednesday with a win in the javelin and the shot put.

"We knew that Blue Sky would really score a lot of points because they are so deep and talented," Marshall said. "But Cady Arifin picked up a big win in the triple jump, and some other girls stepped up and got some second and third places for us. In all, I was really pleased with our performance.

The top five finishers in each event from the 9C meet will advance to the Northern C divisional meet in Great Falls on May 15 at Memorial Stadium.
