Northstars, Comets hope for better weather for weekend games

Both the Havre Northstars and Havre Comets will take to the field on Sunday for non-conference baseball games, as always weather permitting.

The game between the two teams was rained out on Wednesday and the unpredictable Montana weather could force the cancellation of both games that are scheduled for Sunday.

The Comets will be on the road in Lewistown to take on the Redbirds in a non-conference doubleheaders. The Northstars will be at home to host a non-conference doubleheader against a conference foe, the Tri-County Cardinals.

Neither of the Havre team's have been able to practice this week with rain and snow soaking Legion Field. Consequently, Evans said he will use plenty of pitchers against Lewistown.

"We are going to use three pitchers each game," Evans said. "It's still early in the season and the kids just haven't played enough to pitch more than that."

The week of missed practice is definitely a concern for both teams, but as Evans said there is a flood of games at the end of May and beginning of June.

"This break might not be too bad," Evans said. "We play so many games in the next few weeks that it might be a good thing."

Lewistown usually produces a solid legion team every year and will be a formidable foe for the Comets.

The Northstars will face a fairly young Tri-County team on Sunday. For the first time, head coach Mickey Williams should have his entire roster of players available.

Levi Briese and Bobby Bergren are close to 100 percent after preseason injuries, and with the game being on Sunday, there should be no conflicts with athletes participating in track or tennis.

With the cancellation of Wednesday's game, Williams will have his entire pitching staff rested. He will also most likely use every pitcher in about two to three innings of work.

The weather will be a factor for the Northstars game. The playing surface at Legion Field is past the point of saturated and any rain could force a cancellation.

The Northstars and Comets game that was rained out has been rescheduled for May 31 at 7 p.m.

The Northstars and Cardinals game will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Legion Field.
