Chester boys edge KG for Northern C title

The Chester Coyotes boys track team proved that you don't need to win every event to win the track meet, you just have to win the right ones.

The Coyote boys team won the 1,600 meter relay, the final event of the meet, to break a 91-all tie with the KG KouGars and capture the Ralph Halverson Northern C Divisional track and field title Thursday at Memorial Stadium.

The team of Patrick Walstad, Kevin Fenger, Logan Lyders and Patrick Wicks ran an impressive time of 3:34.84 to score eight point team points and end the KouGars' bid for their sixth straight Northern C title. KG's relay team finished fifth.

The Geraldine girls, paced by a strong effort from Toni Qunell, captured the girls' team title scoring 79 points to edge Centerville, which finished with 72.

Besides the win in the 1,600 relay, the Coyotes only picked up two other event titles. Walstad captured the 800- and 1,600-meter runs to give Chester its only individual wins. But, the Coyotes got their points in other ways with a multitude of athletes placing in the top five in multiple events.

KG picked up its points the opposite way. The KouGars captured six individual events - four by Casey Crites and two by Thomas Marshall - to score the majority of their points.

Crites was his usual dominating self. He captured the 100-and 200-meter dash titles, cleared 6-6 in the high jump and broke the meet record in the long jump.

Crites sailed to a meet record 21-11 in the long jump breaking the old record of 21-6 held by Kris Kline of Blue Sky.

He almost made it a perfect five for five on the day, but he was edged out by Tyson Wilber of Hobson in the 400 meter dash.

Marshall shook off some sore legs to capture the 110- and 300 hurdle titles.

But the day belonged to the Coyotes and head coach Bill Schlepp, who will be heading to Roundup next year to be the school's principal.

Chester had placers in every event but the shot put to score enough points for the win.

Big Sandy also picked up a pair of boys individual titles. Mason Ophus continued his dominance in the discus ,throwing 161-0, which was 25 feet farther than his nearest competitor. Adam Butler didn't have quite as easy of a time in the 3,200 meter run. Butler edged Josh Gondiero of Belt.

On the girls side, Qunell made Thursday her personal showcase. The scintillating sophomore ran a meet record 12.28 in the 100-meter dash breaking the old record of 12.40 ran by Karla Howes of Belt in 1993. But Qunell was far from done. She captured the 200, the 400, the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles to make it a perfect five-for-five on the day.

District 9C champ Blue Sky finished a distant fourth in the meet with 40 points. The Eagles didn't win any individual titles, but did place several athletes in the top five to ensure berths into the Class C state meet. Kaila Warren had a solid day, placing fifth in the 400, third in the 100 hurdles, fifth in the 300 hurdles and was also part of the third place 1,600 relay team.

Kile Patrick picked up a third in the 1,600 and a fourth in the 800 for the Eagles.

District 9C's lone girls title came from KG's Kim Berg in the javelin. Berg picked up an easy win, tossing 133-2 and outdistancing the competition by almost eight feet. Berg also picked up a third in the shot put.

The top five placers from this meet qualify for next weekend's Class C State Track and Field Meet in Missoula.
