Roe signs to play football, baseball for Mary

Havre High School senior and standout football player Tyson Roe as signed an NAIA National letter of intent to play football for the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. next fall.

Roe, who was a multi-year starter for the Havre Blue Ponies, will also play baseball in the spring for the Marauders.

"I was considering going to either Carroll College, Rocky Mountain or UM-Western," Roe said. "But I really liked Mary and all that they have to offer there. I also think that having the opportunity to play baseball and football was interesting to me."

Another major factor in Roe's decision to attend the University of Mary was his choice of major. Roe, who has a 3.4 GPA at Havre High, will major in athletic training.

"I think that their athletic training program was the biggest factor in deciding to go there," Roe said. "Mary has a four-year program and other schools only have two years, which means I would have had to transfer later.

"Mary also is remodeling their athletic facilities and it is a great campus," Roe added. "I just think it will be a great place to go to school."

As for football, Roe said that Marauders head coach Myron Schultz has not told him where he will be playing or if he'll redshirt his first season. But one thing is for certain, the Marauders are getting an extremely accomplished high school football player.

In his senior season, Roe helped guide the Havre Blue Ponies to a runner-up finish in the Class A state championship game, as well as a Central A conference championship. He was named first-team all-state and all-conference at offensive guard as well as second-team all-state and first-team all-conference at defensive tackle.

Roe is also a standout first baseman for the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team and currently has a .275 batting average and .985 fielding percentage.

Aside from his sports prowess, Roe also is active in his church youth group, Key Club, and on the HY-HC Community Assets Advisory Committee.

He is the son of Dana and Cindy Roe.
