Northstars, Comets hook up again

It's becoming a regular Wednesday night affair between the Havre Comets and Havre Northstars. The two squads will hook up once again tonight, as the Comets host the Northstars in one nine-inning Northern A conference game at Legion Field.

Last Wednesday night, the Northstars vented their frustrations of a loss the day before on the Comets, trouncing them 15-2 in seven innings. This time the Northstars aren't coming off a loss, in fact they aren't coming off much of anything, but practice. The last game the Northstars played was against the Comets since their doubleheader against Lewistown on Sunday was canceled.

With the long layoff from game action, Northstar head coach Mickey Williams is a little concerned about his team being rusty.

"I am little worried because we haven't played a game since we played the Comets the last time and we've only had one practice on the field," he said. "We might be a little rusty. But I am sure we'll be fine as long as we make the plays."

Williams will have close to a full roster for tonight's game. Steve Heberly, who is resting for track, will not play, but other spring multi-sport athletes like Daine Solomon and Mark Benjamin should see action.

While the Northstars are in desperate need of game action, the Comets have had plenty. They are coming off of a split against the Glasgow Reds on Sunday.

With the recent games, Comet head coach Bob Evans is hoping to use just two pitchers in tonight's contest.

"I'd really prefer to use just two pitchers," Evans said. "If we only go seven innings, I will only use two, but if we go nine innings, I may have to use three."

Righthander Chase Castloo will get the start for a Comet squad that finally has all of its players focusing solely on baseball.

"We should have our full squad," Evans said. "Chase and Coda (Tchida) are done with tennis and Patch (Wirtzberger) is also done with track. Now we can start getting guys playing time in positions where they can excel."

Williams will start righthander Corey Junck with Ian Spencer most likely relieving if necessary.

"Corey has only thrown about six minutes this season," Williams said. "We need to get him some innings."

Evans isn't afraid to admit that his squad is a bit of an underdog going into the game. He said his team has to score some runs to compete with their older cohorts.

"We are going to have to do something to score some runs," Evans said. "We're not very big, not very fast and don't hit for much power. We are going to have to do it in other ways like bunting and hit and runs. You can't get by scoring one or two runs a game in Legion baseball."

Game time tonight is 7 p.m.
