Glasgow lawyer joins field

A Glasgow lawyer has announced he will seek the state district judge vacancy in the Twelfth Judicial District.

James D. Rector said today he has applied for the judgeship, which is seated in Havre. The spot was left vacant earlier this month by the resignation of John Warner. Warner, a Great Falls native, was sworn in Monday to the Montana Supreme Court after 15 years as district judge.

Rector has operated a private law firm in Glasgow for 24 years. He graduated from Montana State University-Eastern in 1972 with a degree in business. During the mid 1970s he worked in Great falls as a trust officer with Norwest Capital Management and the Trust Corporation of Montana.

He attended law school at the University of Montana, graduating in 1979. Following graduation, he moved to Glasgow where he purchased a private practice which he has operated ever since.

The practice is a broad one, he said.

"I'm a general practitioner in every sense of the word," he said. "I handle a little bit of everything." The majority of his case load involves commercial real estate and family law, though he does handle a limited number of criminal cases, he said.

Rector cited his broad legal experience as a qualification for the district judge position. He added the fact that he does not live in Havre is an additional qualification because he is free of any conflicting interests.

The lawyer said he is excited about the prospect of becoming a district judge.

"It's kind of the apex of a legal career," he said. "It's a job I think I would do well."

The attorney said he would be thrilled to make a home in Havre.

"I am excited about the idea of moving there. I have always enjoyed it there," he said, adding that he would miss Glasgow.

Rector was born in Havre, and grew up in Harlem. He lives with his wife, Pamela, and has two grown children.

The Glasgow lawyer joins two Havreites as candidates for the judgeship. Hill County Attorney David Rice and Havre lawyer Steve Brown have also applied for the position.
