Ticket sales begin for Heritage Center fund-raiser

Details have been worked out for a raffle to raise money for the Heritage Center and send the winner on a trip for two to Denver to watch a Colorado Rockies baseball game in July.

The fund-raising and special events committee of the Clack Foundation met on Wednesday to coordinate the raffle.

The trip was donated by Big Sky Airlines, and Havre Mayor Bob Rice decided that proceeds from a raffle of the trip should go the Heritage Center.

The prospect of new funds is timely for the cash-strapped Clack Foundation, which maintains the historic building. Several current and former board members appealed to the finance committee of the Havre City Council on Monday night for help, telling the city that the foundation could not continue to support the building much longer without help.

The foundation has a $600 monthly operating shortfall from the building, which also has numerous serious structural issues including a leaky roof and failing boilers.

The raffle tickets, at $5 each, went on sale today at the Heritage Center.

Several area businesses will begin selling tickets on Saturday, committee chair Gary Wilson said. The winners will be drawn on July 19.

The participating businesses include Magic Carpet Travel, Norman's Ranch & Sporstwear, Mel's Foods, The Coffee Hound, Hill County Printing Co., J.M. Donoven Designs in Fine Jewelry, Julie's Hallmark, Creative Leisure and Gary & Leo's IGA.

Tickets will be sold at a public location every Saturday, Wilson said, beginning with the Holiday Village Shopping Center on Saturday and June 14. On June 21 they will be sold at Kmart, he said.

Tickets will also be sold at the Heritage Center.

"I believe the Heritage Center is a vital part of downtown Havre," said Tracey Warburton, co-owner of Magic Carpet Travel. "Right now there's financial problems (at the center) and Magic Carpet wants to help."

She added that she hoped the mayor and the City Council would be involved in selling raffle tickets.
