Filing deadline nears for city council seats

With less than a week until the filing deadline, only one person has filed to run for Havre City Council in the September primary.

Only one of five incumbents whose terms expire - Democrat Emily Mayer - has filed for re-election, Hill County deputy election administrator Betty Williams said this morning. The deadline is Thursday.

"We still have another week," Williams said. "Sometimes people like to wait until the last minute."

Four four-year positions and one two-year position will be open. Four-year positions coming open include Democrat Doug Larson's seat in Ward 1, Republican Gary Schubert's seat in Ward 2, Democrat Jack Brandon's seat in Ward 3, and Mayer's seat in Ward 4.

Larson and Schubert could not be reached for comment this morning.

Brandon said he's going to annouce next week whether he will run again.

In Ward 2, Democrat Rick Pierson's seat will be open for a two-year term. Pierson has said he will not run again.

In Hingham, Wayland Walls and incumbents Larry Horinek and Robert Spicher have filed for the two available seats.

The deadline to file is Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Clerk and Recorder's Office. The filing fee is $10.

The primary election will be held on Sept. 9.
