Brothers leads Havre High team to title at first ever MSU-Northern team camp

The Havre High Blue Ponies defeated Saco in the championship of the first annual Montana State University-Northern Lights Team Camp Tournament. Havre had five players score in double figures led by standout Cory Brothers, who scored a game-high 20 points. Logan Grant had 18 points while Jeremy Giardina added 15 and Jarod Weigel pumped in 11. Patch Wirtzberger was the fifth player to score double figures with 10 points in the win. Zach Mandeville led Saco with 16 points while Jared Mandeville had 14 and Patrick Menge added 10 in the loss.

For his efforts, Brothers was named the camp Most Valuable Player while Colby Bliss of Dutton-Brady won the tourney scoring title averaging 32 points a game.

On Friday night, Lights head coach Shawn Huse introduced a new brand of tournament action termed the Situational Tournaments. The three "mini-tournaments" began with various scenarios and are intended to help players, coaches and officials gain more experience in end-of-game situations. Havre High won the "Free-Throw" tournament and "Three-Point" tournament while Hays-Lodge Pole won the "Out-Under" tournament.

The team camp, which was made up of eight teams (Box Elder, Dutton-Brady, Hays, Havre High I and II, Kremlin-Gildford, Rocky Boy and Saco), rounds out the camp season for the MSU-Northern.

"Overall our camps went very well," Huse said. "We saw over seventy campers throughout the day camp and shooting camp, which was up substantially from last year. All of the instructors (assistant coach Nate Larson, former Lights player Charlie Ereaux, Great Falls recruit Cody Gillespie and returning Lights player Landen Grant) did a great job teaching some basketball and everyone had a great time."

Tournament scoring (points/game) leaders for each team:

Box Elder - Tim Rossette 15, James Burns 14

Havre High I - Cory Brothers 25, Jeremy Giardina 13, Logan Grant 10
