Northstars take out frustrations on Sparkies

It didn't matter who the Havre Northstars were playing on Wednesday. They were going to take out some frustrations on them.

After being swept at home by the Lethbridge Miners on Tuesday, the Northstars crushed the Great Falls Sparkies in a pair of games Wednesday in Great Falls at Don Olsen Memorial Field.

Havre pounded out 41 hits en route to 41 runs as they cruised to the doubleheader sweep of the Sparkies.

After the disappointing losses to Lethbridge, Northstars head coach Mickey Williams was happy with his team's resiliency to bounce back.

"We played as well as to be expected in those type of games," Williams said. "Those are games we should win pretty easily and we didn't take it for granted. We came out, played hard and put them away early."

In the opening game, Havre scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back as they coasted to a 24-1 win.

Havre starter Chazz Hurlburt was stellar on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing just one run on two hits while striking out nine batters.

The Northstars offense was clicking as six players registered three hits in the game. Tyson Roe and Levi Briese had big games for Havre. Roe finished 3-5 with five RBIs while Briese was 3-3 with four RBIs. Mark Benjamin, Daine Solomon, Dusty Heath and Ian Spencer also had three hits in the win.

In the nightcap, the Havre bats continued to stay hot. The Northstars had 20 hits in a 17-2 win.

Tyler Thompson had big game for the Northstars, picking up four hits and driving in six runs. Solomon also had four hits with five RBIs while Roe, Benjamin and Briese added three hits apiece.

The two wins improved the Northstars' record to 22-6 in the Northern district and 38-17 overall. More importantly, Havre maintained its hold on second place in the conference standings.

"We want to stay in second place," Williams said. "It's important to be in second going into the conference tournament."

The Northstars will wrap up their regular season on Sunday when they host Great Falls Stallions at 1 p.m. at Legion Field.
