Northstars sweep Stallions

Tyson Roe made his last game at Legion Field a memorable one.

Roe's fly ball to center in the bottom of the seventh scored Daine Solomon with the game-winning run as the Havre Northstars swept the Great Falls Stallions A squad 6-5 Sunday at Legion Field.

The Northstars didn't have quite as much trouble with the Stallions in the first game, drubbing them 13-2.

It was the nightcap that provided the excitement and drama. After grabbing a 2-1 lead in the first inning, Havre's bats went unusually quiet. The Northstars were held hitless over the next four innings while the Stallions retook the lead.

Great Falls got to starter Steve Heberly in the top of the fourth. Heberly worked himself into a bit of a jam to open the inning. After Heberly hit the first batter and walked the next, the Northstars defense came up with a clutch play as Ian Spencer turned a nice double play at third to give Havre two outs.

But the Stallions rallied as Heberly allowed a single to score the lead-off runner. A Spencer error at third kept the inning alive and Great Falls' Paul Gysberg scored a pair of runs to give them a 4-1 lead.

Heberly was lifted for Tyler Thompson, who promptly got the next batter to pop out to right field to end the inning.

The Stallions weren't finished. After holding the Northstars scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, they added another run in the fifth as a lead-off walk came back to haunt Thompson.

Havre's offense finally came alive in the bottom of the sixth. Ian Spencer and Tyson Roe hit back-to-back doubles to end the Northstars' scoring drought.

Thompson made quick work of the Stallions in the top of the seventh, striking out two of three batters.

In the bottom of the seventh, Havre got a pair of singles from Heberly and Adam Jensen to get the rally going. Solomon tied the game by driving in both runs with a double, setting up Roe's game-winning heroics.

Solomon drove in three runs while Roe finished with a pair of RBIs in the win. Spencer and Jensen each contributed with a pair of hits.

Thompson picked up the win in relief, allowing just one run in just over three innings of work. After missing more than a week of practice and games so he could play in the East-West Shrine game, Heberly was predictably rusty. He still allowed just five hits and struck out six in three innings of work.

In the opening game, Havre broke open a 2-1 game in the bottom of the third, scoring 10 runs on eight hits while the Stallions committed three costly errors in the inning.

Dusty Heath had an RBI single and an RBI triple to highlight the inning. Levi Briese added a two-run single while Adam Jensen and Solomon each had run-scoring singles.

Heath finished 3-3 with three RBIs while Briese was also 3-3 with two RBIs. Mark Benjamin chipped in with a pair of RBI singles.

Ian Spencer picked up the win, pitching four innings and allowing just two earned runs while striking out five. Brandon Morse pitched a scoreless fifth for the Northstars.

The Northstars wrapped up the regular season with a 24-6 conference record and a 40-17 overall record. They will head to Medicine Hat on Thursday for the Northern A District Tournament.
