Downtown Havre hosts Nothin' But Net tournament

If you like basketball and you like your hoops hot, then downtown Havre will be the place to be on Saturday afternoon as the city will once again play host to the annual Nothin' But Net three-on-three basketball tournament.

The annual tourney is open to all ages up to seniors in high school and the action will take place on the pavement of downtown Havre on Fourth Avenue between Second street and Fourth street beginning at 9 a.m.

The annual basketball tourney is a benefit fund-raiser and all proceeds will used to create four $1,000 scholarships for prospective Montana State University-Northern students.

Tournament director D.J. Baker said that the scholarships are a big part of what makes this tournament so special.

"We donate the money from this tournament to four scholarships and juniors and seniors in high school, who are going to attend MSU-Northern are all eligible," Baker said. "It is a great way for us to put the proceeds from this tournament to really good use."

The tournament gets underway in the morning with round-robin play and each team will play three games in the round-robin pool. In the afternoon, all teams will be bracketed and then play a single elimination tournament to declare a champion.

Baker said that this year the tourney will feature divisions for both boys and girls teams with the possibility of changing that format in the future.

"We guarantee each team that enters the tournament at least three games," Baker said. "And we have both boys and girls divisions this year. We may make it co-ed in the future however, but it all depends on the number of entries from year to year."

As for entries this year, Baker says that there has been good interest in the tourney. Friday afternoon will be the cutoff to get into the hoop hysteria.

"We have had a lot of success with the turnout in years past," Baker said. "And we're looking forward to another good turnout and another successful day of basketball this year."

Not only is Baker looking forward to a successful tournament on the pavement, but he says that things have already been successful in the way of getting help for the event.

"People have really stepped up to help us out with this event," Baker said. "All the tournament workers and participants will be treated to the Taco Cart from Taco John's for lunch and all entrants will receive a blue and white basketball courtesy of Independence Bank."

The Nothin' But Net tourney will get underway with registration at 8:00 a.m. and round-robin play begins at 9. The single-elimination tournament is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
