Havre's Obie ties for second in State Amateur

It was a big week of golf in Havre as Beaver Creek Golf Course hosted another week of league golf as well as Pennington's Scramble on Saturday afternoon.

In Helena, Havre golfing sensation Nick Obie made a run at a second MSGA golf championship this summer by finishing in a three-way tie for second place at the Montana State Men's Amateur Championship at Green Meadows Golf Club in Helena.

The tournament was captured by Columbus standout Brandon Davison, who fired a final-round 68 to finish with a four-day total of 13 under par. Obie began the week with a stellar 3-under-par 68. However, that score put him several shots out of the lead, which was held by Great Falls standout Scott Anderson. Obie followed his first round with back-to-back days of even-par golf before firing a final-round 67. His four- day total of 277 put him in a three-way tie with Anderson and Nathan Bailey of Laurel.

The second-place tie was Obie's best finish at the State Amateur tourney. Obie won the Montana State Match Play championship last month at Eagle Bend Golf Course in Bigfork.

Along with Obie's fine showing at the state am, Havre also had a family affair in Helena last weekend led by Jon Johnstone, who finished the state amateur in 20th place in the championship flight with a four-day total of 293. Johnstone's brother, Jason, finished with a four-day total of 308, and their father, Steve, came in at 326. Tory Toner of Havre also finished well with a 72-hole total of 311.

In Havre, the men's league golf season began to wind down just as the weather started to heat up. On Tuesday night, Havre Laundry grabbed high-team honors with 23.5 points. Havre Laundry is made up of Dave Boles, Neal Brenna and Jim and Byron Welter. Dick Scharfe and Jim Kato shared low-gross honors after both players fired 1-under-par rounds of 35. Rick Carlson took home low net for the night with a 29.

On Wednesday night, high-team honors were shared by Office Equipment and D.A. Davidson at 22.5 points. Office Equipment is composed of Bob Blazer, Jeff Jensen, Dave Hamilton and Rick Carlson while D.A. Davidson consists of Max Erickson, Steve Strand, Dave Herman and Frank Peterson. Murray Barkus earned low-gross honors with an even-par 36 while Alan Pearson grabbed low net with a 30.

There are just five weeks remaining in the regular season. On Tuesday night, Havre Laundry will have a bye while Erickson-Baldwin and Havre Credit Bureau are out on Wednesday.

On Saturday, BCGC played host to the second annual Pennington's Scramble. In all, 17 teams participated. The tournament was captured by the team of Dan Wagner, Brett Gilman, Kevin Olson and George Ferguson. It was the second straight year that the foursome has won the 18-hole scramble. They came in with an 11-under-par 61.

It will be another busy weekend of golf across the Hi-Line again as BCGC hosts the annual Northern Montana Hospital Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The tourney is an 18-hole, four-person scramble and money raised from a calcutta auction will go to help the Hi-Line Sleep Lab. The hospital tournament is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 11 a.m.

The Chinook Golf and Country Club will also be busy Sunday as it hosts the annual Pow-Wow Golf Tournament. The powwow tourney will be an 18-hole flighted stroke play event and nonhandicapped players will be required to post a nine-hole qualifying score on Saturday. The tournament will get under way with a shotgun start at 1 p.m..
