Pfc. Shawn Christopher McLain is the son of Butch and Kitten McLain of Havre. He has a sister, Briana. His grandparents are Richard and Gay McLain, and Willard and Kay Kickbusch, all of Havre.

McLain graduated from Havre High School in 2002, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 2002. He completed basic training in Fort Jackson, S.C. He trained as a fuel petroleum specialist at Fort Lee, Va., and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He then went to his permanent duty station in Fort Lewis, Wash.
