Obie competes in U.S. Amateur championship

Former Havre High golf standout Nick Obie has had a busy and successful summer on the golf course. Now Obie finish his summer golf season by facing the toughest amateur competition in the United States when he begins play today at the 2003 U.S. Amateur golf championship in Pittsburgh.

Obie won the Montana sectional qualifier on Aug. 4 at Bridger Creek Golf Club in Bozeman with a two-day total of 140. He defeated Laurel standout Nathan Bailey by two strokes to qualify for today's tournament.

Obie's quest for the biggest prize in amateur golf begins this morning with 18 holes of stroke play. Tuesday will feature the second round of stroke play. The 36-hole event will be held at Pittsburgh Fields Golf Club. From there the field of more than 250 competitors will be narrowed to the top 64 and those final competitiors will play a match play tournament at famed Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., to decide the 2003 amateur champion.

Already this season Obie participated in the prestigious U.S. Public Links championships in New Jersey. He also captured the Montana State Match Play championship and finished second at the Montana State Men's Amateur.

The 2003 U.S. Amateur will be televised on ESPN Wednesday through Friday and NBC will televise the final two days of the tournament Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, in Havre the Ladies League golf association will crown a 2003 champion on Thursday night. This past Thursday saw the Golf Course Restaurant defeat Havre Heating and Air Conditioning 22-14 in one semifinal match. Independence Bank defeated Making Waves 21-14 in the other semifinal match to set up Thursday night's championship tilt. Making Waves and Havre Heating and Air Conditioning will play on Thursday night for third and fourth place.

In men's league action on Tuesday night, Drivers Choice captured high-team honors with a spectacular 25 points performance. Drivers Choice is composed of Dave Hamilton, Steve Burstock, Bob Breum and Larry Johnson. Patrick Winderl garnered low-gross honors with a 37 and Steve Granell earned low-net score with a 26.5.

On Wednesday night Clausen & Sons grabbed high-team honors with 24 total points. Clausen & Sons consists of Buzz Pizzini, Dave Clausen, Terry Schend and Tracey McLain. Jim Kato earned low-gross honors after firing an even-par 36, and Kerry Ward and Steve Mariani shared low-net with a 30.5.

There are just two weeks remaining in the regular season. On Tuesday night Stockman Bank will have a bye, and US Bank and Wells Fargo will be out on Wednesday night.

On Saturday, Beaver Creek Golf Course played host to the annual Skylights Scramble. The 18-hole four-person event was won by the team of Bruce Normandy, Trent Normandy, Don Normandy and Dave Herman with a gross score of 51. The team of Jim Kato, Rick Kato, Barry Kato and Greg Baltrusch captured the low-net title with a net score of 47.3. Trent Normandy also captured the pitch, putt and drive competition.

Tournament action will continue this weekend across the Hi-Line as well. The Chinook Golf and Country Club will play host to the seventh annual Fireball Scramble. The Fireball tourney will be an 18-hole four-person scramble and the event will get under way with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Possible hole prizes will include a car, golf cart, trip to Hawaii, a television and a one-year golf membership.

Beaver Creek Golf Course will also crown its club champion this weekend. The two-day, 36-hole Club Championship will be held Saturday and Sunday. Players are welcome to play their first round at any time on Saturday and they will then be flighted for Sunday's final 18 holes. Sunday's final round will begin at 9 a.m.
