Another bowling season is rolling our way on the Hi-Line

"Bowling is a wonderful sport. It teaches self-restraint, patience, loyalty, forgiveness, and many other qualities you wouldn't have needed if you hadn't started to bowl."

Are bowlers athletes? In the course of 42 games, a pro player will lift more than five tons, carry it for a total of two miles, and toss the ball more than 700 times at an average of 17 mph at a target 600 feet away.

We aren't pros so I figure you can double all of the above, except the mph, and that's only half of our season. No wonder we're tired when April arrives.

I'm back so you know what time of the year it is. Women's City began last night, Men's City is tonight, and the rest will follow tomorrow, Sunday and Monday.

Bowlers are needed for Sunday Mixed, one couple and four-person teams. The league is handicap and starts at 7 p.m. Monday Straightaway needs teams. This league is a three-person, all men, women or mixed and starts at 7 p.m., and is scratch and bowls four games. If interested, contact Mike Hamilton at 265-2626 or 265-1638 for both of the above.

A new Monday league will be forming and a meeting will be held on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. The league will consist of three or four people teams, handicap, with bowling at 7 p.m. Contact Gary at 265-5885 for more information.

Rock N Bowl begins this Friday night. The grade and middle schools will bowl from 7 to 9 p.m. and high school and public from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. This is an alcohol-, drug- and tobacco-free fun night at a cost of $5.

Jackpot bowling will begin Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. The cost is $10 per person and you must be 18 years of age.

There were many complaints last year that scores were not posted over the lanes. It will be done this season and the highs for the week will also be posted.

I will be keeping track of these scores since I go through the league sheets for this news. Do not look for the scores over the lanes for a few weeks since they will be changing too often unless an exceptional big one is rolled. If you are missed for the paper or the lanes, do not complain to Gary or the desk help, notify me. Last names are a must if you want recognition as I will not look them up. Added series - if you can't do it, the scorers show you your totals; I will not add them up. Scores during prebowl and make-ups will be honored if I have the sheets so leave one copy at the desk.

Liane Jordan and Kathy Moran celebrated their birthdays on Monday. Warren Henderson gained one today. Marcia Durward and Leah Noel have age-adders on Friday, Apple Brown on Monday and Lana Herman and Sue Galle on Tuesday.

Please be patient. It's the first of the year confusion. Scores and some league highlights will be here next week.

I'm always open to suggestions for improvement on your bowling news. Contact me if you have any ideas. If I listen will be questionable. I'm only joking.

Until next week, try the approaches before you bowl and don't break a leg.
