HHS golf team faces Central A foes in Anaconda

Even though it is only the second weekend of September, the Havre High golf team has reached the midway point of its regular season schedule.

Before embarking to Anaconda today, veteran head coach Keith Evenson admitted his teams are not quite in midseason form yet, but hopes it will happen today.

"The boys team has a ways to go because I don't think they have really played to their potential," Evenson said. "Off the tee box they are hitting the ball really well, but they are all having trouble finishing the hole. Our approach shots and putting need to get a lot better because we are losing a lot of strokes in those areas."

As for the girls team, Evenson is happy with the progress that his young team has made thus far, but said that the girls also have some work to do if they are going to accomplish their goal of reaching the Class A state tournament in October.

"I am real pleased with how far the girls team has come," Evenson said. "All of our girls have improved every week. Now we just need to start building on that consistency and hopefully they will continue to get better."

Both Pony teams will get the chance to work on those things at the Anaconda Invitational. The tournament will be held at the Anaconda Country Club and it will be an 18-hole stroke play event.

While Evenson isn't certain as to what teams the Ponies will face, he believes that most of the Havre's Central A counterparts should be in attendance.

"This should be a good tournament for us because at least we will get to see most of the schools from the Central A," Evenson said. "But our goal will just be to improve our scores and get better than we were last week. We'll see where we're at at the end of the tournament."

The Blue Pony boys lineup will remain the same in its first four spots with Trent Normandy, Ben Erickson, Chazz Hurlburt and Tony Jensen. However, Havre will have freshman Brandon Job at the No. 5 spot after he won this week's qualifier.

The girls team will also have a little different look to it as well. Senior Amanda Brock, who is Havre's top returning girl's player from last season, returns to the lineup after a brief absence. Brock will be joined by Brittany Job, Alli Ward, Morgan Zimmer and Kim Bryson.

"We are really happy to have Amanda Brock back in our lineup," Evenson said. "She is a really solid player and her experience will make our team a lot stronger."
