HHS golfers host own invitational

It isn't too often in high school golf that a team gets to be part of homecoming weekend festivities. The Havre High School golf team will take part in festivities not in the stands, but on the golf course. The Ponies will host the Havre High Golf Invitational at Beaver Creek Golf Course on Saturday morning.

Normally, this weekend marks the only time that the Ponies play on their home course all season, but this year Havre will also host the Central A divisional tournament in October, giving them two tourneys at BCGC.

The unfortunate thing about this weekend is that there are also two large AA tournaments in Butte and Missoula this week, leaving the Havre tourney with just five teams.

Joining the Ponies on Saturday will be fellow Central A members Lewistown and Browning as well as the CMR and Great Falls High junior varsity squads.

Despite the lack of teams in the field, Havre High head coach Keith Evenson believes that the tournament will be good for both of his teams.

"I think our boys team should do very well this weekend because they all know the course so well and there isn't going to be that many other really outstanding players in the field," Evenson said. "On the other hand, our girls team is really excited about playing at home because they are very comfortable with our course and they also should do really well. Lewistown will be our toughest competition on the girls side and their No. 1 player is pretty good, but I think all the kids are looking forward to it."

Once again, the Havre High boys team will have a different look at the No. 5 spot as freshmen Matt Hedstrom beat out freshmen Brandon Job in qualifying earlier in the week.

Hedstrom will join Trent Normandy, Ben Erickson, Chazz Hurlburt and Tony Jensen. The HHS girls team will feature Brittany Job, Amanda Brock, Morgan Zimmer, Alli Ward and Catlin Anderson.

"I was hoping that we would have a better turn out teamwise because we are hosting the divisional tournament," Evenson said. "But we just have to make the best out of it and hopefully the kids will all go out and play well. If they do, I think both teams should have a chance to win on Saturday."

The Havre Invitational will be an 18-hole stroke-play tournament and it will get underway with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday's weather forecast for Havre calls for temperatures in the lower 60's with light winds and a 20% chance of rain showers.
