Big Sandy continues to roll with key conference win over Chester

It was a tough football weekend with only three Hi-Line teams picking up wins as the conference schedules are now in full swing.

One of those teams was the Big Sandy Pioneers, who picked up a key 46-20 win over Chester on Friday night. The Pioneers should move up from their No. 3 state ranking as Wibaux, the top-ranked team in Class C, was beaten by Ekalaka in overtime.

The Blue Sky/KG Eagles picked up their second straight win - 33-22 over Centerville.

The J-I Rams picked up a decisive 64-14 win over the Brockton Warriors on Saturday.

Plentywood 34, Chinook 0

The Plentywood Wildcats continued their impressive march toward a District 2B title on Friday night by pounding the visiting Chinook Sugarbeeters 34-0.

The Wildcats scored 14 first-quarter points and never looked back en route to the easy victory. Tailback Cole Carter ran for a score and also caught one of two touchdown passes from quarterback Shane Zeidler. Zeidler finished 14 of 23 for 129 yards and two scores.

Brandon Heppner led the Wildcats on the ground with 77 yards on 27 carries. Plentywood racked up 286 yards of total offense while its defense pitched a shutout against a struggling Beeter offense.

Chinook fell to 1-4 on the season and 1-2 in District 2B play. The Beeters return home to host the Wolf Point Wolves on Friday night.

Glasgow 51, Harlem 0

A promising season has begun to turn into a nightmare for the Harlem Wildcats. Things took another turn for the worse on Friday night as they were blanked by the Glasgow Scotties 51-0 in Glasgow.

The Wildcats surrendered 38 points in the first half and could never get a sputtering offense on track.

The Harlem defense also struggled as Glasgow scored six rushing touchdowns, including four by star running back Tyler Edwards. Edwards scored on runs of 8, 5, 17 and 27 yards while Jess McIntyre added scoring runs of 33 and 23 yards.

Harlem (0-5) will seek its first victory of the season when it hosts the Poplar Indians on Friday night.

Big Sandy 46, Chester 20

The No. 3-ranked Big Sandy Pioneers haven't had many tests on the football field in 2003. But they passed a major one on Friday night as they downed archrival Chester, 46-20, taking another major step toward a Northern C divisional championship.

The game was played at a furious pace as both teams scored twice in the first quarter. Skylar Pearson opened the game with a 9-yard touchdown plunge to give the Pioneers a brief lead. But the Coyotes bounced back with back-to-back scoring runs by Mitch Violett and Patrick Wicks.

However, the Pioneers answered on their next possession on a 49-yard TD run by quarterback Gage Brumwell and they never looked back. Adam Jesperson scored from 15 yards out to pad the Pioneers' lead to 24-12 at halftime. Brumwell then put the contest out of reach in the third period when he scored on runs of 30 and 47 yards. The Pioneers scored 38 unanswered points before Matthew Wicks scored a late TD for the Coyotes.

Big Sandy (5-0) will return home to host Hays-Lodge Pole on Friday night and the Coyotes (3-2) will look to rebound on Saturday when they travel to Rudyard to take on rival Blue Sky/KG.

Valier 56, Hays-Lodge Pole 6

The Valier Panthers cruised to an easy Northern C victory by routing Hays-Lodge Pole, 56-6, in Valier Friday night.

The Panthers raced out to a 22-0 first quarter lead and they tacked on 20 more points in the second quarter to balloon the Thunderbird deficit to 46 at halftime.

Jeff Trafelet led the way for the Panthers with 134 yards rushing and four touchdowns. The T-Birds' only score came on a 7-yard run by Lance Brockie in the fourth quarter.

The Thunderbirds (0-5) will now travel to No. 3 Big Sandy on Friday night.

Blue Sky/KG 33, Centerville 22

The Blue Sky/KG Eagles kept their playoff hopes alive on Saturday afternoon by picking up a huge road win over the Centerville Miners 33-22.

The Eagles took an early lead on a 50-yard run by Matt Strissel in the first period. Kaare Engebretson also scored from 6 yards out in the second quarter to give the Eagles a 13-8 lead.

The Eagles then put the game out of reach in the third quarter and into the fourth as they scored three straight times, including another long run by Strissel and a a 19-yard touchdown pass from Jeremiah Moog to Cody Donovan.

Blue Sky/KG is now 3-2 on the season and will host the Chester Coyotes on Saturday afternoon in a pivotal Northern C showdown.

Geraldine 84, Box Elder 35

It has been feast or famine for the Box Elder Bears so far this season. One week after routing Brockton, the Bears were on the receiving end of the same outcome as they were hammered by the Geraldine Tigers, 84-35, in Northern six-man action Saturday afternoon in Box Elder.

The Tigers scored an insurmountable 40 points in the first 12 minutes of the contest and added 27 in the second period to build a 67-24 lead at halftime. The Bears scored in the first quarter on a 5-yard pass from Neal Rosette to James Burns. Rosette also threw a 3-yard TD strike to Tyler Henry. Henry threw two TD passes, including a 33-yard strike to Dane Healy, while running for another score.

Meanwhile, Matt Clark paced the Tigers as he scored six times on the day. Clark scored on runs of 1, 37 and 2 yards. Clark also returned two interceptions for TDs and caught a scoring pass.

The Bears (2-3) will look to rebound on Saturday afternoon when they host archrival Rocky Boy at 1 p.m.

Geyser 72, Rocky Boy 6

The Geyser Wranglers scored 52 unanswered first-half points en route to a 72-6 victory over the Rocky Boy Stars Saturday afternoon in Geyser.

Geyser quarterback Matt Neumann scored six times, including four touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns. Trevor Annala was on the receiving end of three of Neumann's TD passes and rushed for two more scores.

Rocky Boy's lone TD came late in the second quarter when Garrett Demontiney found Kyle Windy Boy on a 14-yard touchdown pass.

The Stars (1-4) will travel to Box Elder on Saturday afternoon.

Joplin-Inverness 64, Brockton 14
