HHS golfers post solid showing at Flatfish

For the both the Havre High girls and boys golf teams, it turned out that the final regular season meet of 2003 was worth the wait as both teams competed well at the prestigious Flatfish Invitational held Thursday and Friday in Kalispell and Whitefish.

The Blue Pony boys team finished a very solid seventh place with a two-day total of 648. The tournament was captured by CMR with a 613. The two host schools, Whitefish and Kalispell, finished a distant second and third, respectively.

"I was really pleased with the way the boys played," said Havre High head coach Keith Evenson. "They all struck the ball very well, but putting hurt some of the kids."

Individually, Havre got an impressive performance from senior Trent Normandy.

Normandy opened the tournament with a 77 on Thursday at Buffalo Hills and then fired a 75 at Whitefish North on Friday to finish in a three-way tie for first place with CMR standout Joey Zahara and Whitefish junior Spencer Hughes. Zahara ended up capturing the tournament in a playoff.

"Trent put himself in good position by playing well the first day," Evenson said. "I was really happy for him because all season he had pointed to this tournament as the one he really wanted to do well at because he had never had a top 10 there before. He played really well."

Chazz Hurlburt finished with a 161 and junior Ben Erickson finished right behind him with a 162. Freshmen Matt Hedstrom also had a strong showing with a two-day total of 173. Tony Jensen rounded out the scoring for the Ponies with a 191.

The Havre High girls team also finished strong with a two-day team total of 836, good enough for seventh place overall. The girls tourney was captured by Helena High with a team total of 736 and medalist honors went to the Bengals' Darrah Newell.

Once again, senior Brittany Job led the way for the Ponies, finishing in ninth place overall. Job fired an opening round 96 at Whitefish North and followed that up with a round of 95 at Buffalo Hills on Friday.

"Brittany was very consistent once again this weekend and it is no surprise because she has been playing that well for a while now," Evenson said. "She has really been playing good golf. I think she has definitely put herself right where she wants to be going into divisionals."

Freshmen Alli Ward finished the tourney with a total score of 208, while Morgan Zimmer came in at 220. Amanda Brock had a 228 and Catlin Anderson finished at 232.

"I think the girls team has really started to play well lately," Evenson said. "They really did well this weekend considering how challenging the courses were and how solid the competition they were up against. I think this finish will give them a lot of confidence going into the divisional tournament."

Havre is now set to host the Central A Divisional tournament on Saturday morning. The 18-hole tournament is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. at Beaver Creek Golf Course.
