CHARLES SHAFFER obituary

Charles Franklin Shaffer, 90, died on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, due to emphysema.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Havre. A luncheon will follow at the church.

Charles was born on Sept. 10, 1913, to Charles Wesley and Susie (Andrus) Shaffer in Lebanon, Kan. He moved with his family to Montana in 1918, where they homesteaded north of Havre.

He worked various jobs, retiring from Northern Montana College as a custodian. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II receiving a Purple Heart and an honorable discharge.

On July 1, 1946, he married Adeline "Georgia" Cox in Helena.

He was a member of the Eagles and the Elks.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia, and twin daughters in 1950; parents, Charles Wesley and Susie Shaffer in 1968; brother, George Shaffer in 1960; and sister Dorothy Knudson in 1986.

Survivors include his daughter, Susie Beston of Havre; grandchildren, Torrie Cushman and Candace Beston, both of Great Falls, and Brian Beston of Seattle; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Nina Wales of Van Nuys, Calif.; special friend, Bonnie Hranac of Havre; several cousins, including Thelma Neely of Billings; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 825 Helena Ave., Helena, MT, or to a donor's choice.

Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook is in charge of arrangements.
