Loy Chvilicek to portray fort chaplain's spouse

This year's celebrity luncheon series at the Heritage Center kicks off with a local woman's portrayal of a local historical figure.

Loy Chvilicek, who recently moved from Havre to Helena, will return to give a performance as E.S. Dodd, wife of the Rev. S.G. Dodd, the first chaplain of Fort Assinniboine.

The material for Chvilicek's presentation is taken from a diary of S.G. Dodd, donated to the Fort Assinniboine Preservation Association by a California couple who toured the fort. Other materials owned by the Preservation Association also were used in writing the presentation.

Chvilicek, known for Victorian teas she gives in full costume, will portray E.S. Dodd on a typical day she would have had in 1881 or 1882.

Gary Wilson of the Clack Foundation and the Fort Assinniboine Preservation Association said the presentation will show a different side of the fort. Rather than dealing with the military side of life, the diary deals with the day-to-day activities and social life in the officers' quarters.

S.G. Dodd, a Presbyterian minister, moved his family from Bloomfield, N.J., to become chaplain at the fort and was chaplain for about 12 years. The Dodds' son, Angi, also moved to the fort, and worked as a bookkeeper at the post trader's store.

The event, which costs $15, will feature a spaghetti luncheon served by Super Ice Cream. It will begin at noon on Wednesday in the courtroom on the third floor of the Heritage Center.

People are asked to call 265-7258 to make reservations.
