Boys cross country ends season

The Havre High boys cross country club wrapped up its 2003 season with a solid showing at the Harlem Invitational on Saturday.

Havre finished in fourth place with a team score of 98, while senior Kasey Barsotti claimed the individual title in his last race with a blazing time of 16:18. Fellow senior Jeff Sprinkle finished in third place with a 16:43.

According to head coach Ron Watson, Barsotti and Sprinkle lead the race together for the first mile, before pulled Barsotti pulled away, steadily widening the gap from the pack.

"I knew if I was going to run good today I knew I needed to do it by myself, so I left the group," Barsotti said. "I'm glad I did it. I had fun and it was great closure."

Several other Havre runners had solid race with four of the seven finishing with personal bests.

Marcus Campbell finished in 24th with an 18:21 while Cody McLean was 26th with a 18:32. Will Long and Jeff Hedstrom finished in 44th and 45th both running personal bests. Clay Nottingham also improved on his personal record by over a minute running a 22:00 which placed him in 59th.

Despite the positive performance, assistant coach Jerome Tharaud remained a little disappointed for Barsotti and Sprinkle, who end their careers without competing at the divisional or state level.

"It's disappointing for all of the guys that we can't compete at the divisional and state meets, especially since Jeff and Kasey have been so competitive this year," Tharaud said. "They're two of the best runners in the state, and the teams they race against know it."

Said Watson: "The Havre club wants to thank Kasey and Jeff (Sprinkle) for their dedication. We've been fortunate to have team leaders that hand down their strengths."
