The award is given based on several categories, including contributions to public education in Montana, membership in education organizations, involvement with the School Administrators of Montana, contributions to civic and public organizations, and publications and presentations.
Miller said he is indebted to many people who have worked with him to improve education in the state.
"I'd like to thank all the great variety of people I've worked with, both in Havre and Helena, because it's their diligent effort on behalf of kids that's truly making a difference."
Miller chairs the state Board of Public Education. He serves on the Montana K-12 School Renewal Commission, a group of state officials and educators that was set up by the Legislature this spring to look at education funding and make recommendations to the 2005 Legislature. He also served on the Governor's Public School Funding Advisory Council and the Montana Economic Development Action Group in 2001 and 2002. Miller was nominated by Gov. Marc Racicot to serve on the National Assessment Governing Board in 2002, although he did not serve on it. From 1999 to 2000 Miller co-chaired the Montana Accreditation Task Force.
Miller served as the president of the Hi-Line Administrators in 1999 and 2000, and was president of the North Central Administrators in 1995 and 1996 while superintendent of Cascade Public Schools.
Locally Miller is a member of the Northern Montana Health Care board of directors, the Business Development Committee of the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Local Emergency Planning Committee for Havre and Hill County. He has served as president of the Northern Montana College Alumni Association. He also serves with numerous local organizations including the Havre Rotary Club, the Community Crime Intervention/Prevention Committee and Health Communities-Healthy Youth.
Miller received a bachelor's degree in education and an associate degree in engineering from Montana State University-Northern in 1981. He completed a master's degree in education at MSU-Bozeman in 1989, and his doctorate in education in 1999 at Bozeman.
He became superintendent of Havre Public Schools in 1996.
Darrell Rud, executive director of the School Administrators of Montana, said he thinks one of Miller's most important accomplishments has been his work as the chair of the state Board of Public Education.
"He has done just an incredible number of things to unite that board and make them very member-responsive and responsive to the public," Rud said.
He also pointed to Miller's ability to juggle local and state education involvement.
"He can be a very effective superintendent as well as sharing his talents with the rest of the state," Rud said.
Havre Public Schools Superintendent Kirk Miller has received an award given each year to the school administrator who has made the greatest contribution to improving education in Montana.
The School Administrators of Montana, a coalition of five educational organizations that provides member services and professional development for school administrators across the state, presented Miller with the G.V. Erickson Award at its annual convention Thursday in Bozeman. The award recipient is selected every year from the group's membership of about 830 Montana education administrators. This year those members nominated four people, including Miller, who was picked by a selection committee earlier this fall.
Miller said today the award came as a great surprise.
"I'm honored to receive the award because when you look at the people who have received it in the past, they're people who have done wonderful things for the kids of Montana, and I'm just honored to be included in that list," he said.
