Second dual highlights Maroon-Gold intrasquad dual matches

The annual Montana State University-Northern Maroon-Gold Intrasquad wrestling duals couldn't have been more opposite.

The duals that took place on Friday and Saturday offered a wide array of results and matches, but the Saturday night dual in Shepherd was everything the Friday dual in Havre wasn't - mainly exciting.

The Lights put on a brilliant show on the road, featuring strong wrestling and plenty of takedowns in front of a large crowd at the Shepherd High School gymnasium.

Former Shepherd standout Emmett Willson delighted the crowd, making quick work of freshman Brian Fritchman with a pin. But Willson wasn't the only one providing excitement on the night.

Chris Smith and Jacob Scoles had a thrilling match at 141 pounds. Smith rallied from an 8-2 deficit in the third period to tie the match at 11 and win in overtime.

"It was an unbelievable match," said head coach David Ray. "They really wrestled hard the entire time."

At 165, Aaron Jensen avenged a loss the night before, defeating Tyson Springer 5-4. Jensen, who was pinned by Springer on Friday, wrestled a technically proficient match.

"Aaron wrestled a really smart match," Ray said. "Tyson's a tough wrestler. He beat Kyle Fisher and Mike Lester when he was in junior college. This was a good win for Aaron."

Jensen wasn't the only wrestler to get some redemption on Saturday. Newcomer Jesse Juarez avenged a 1-0 loss to Kyle Fisher on Friday by pinning Fisher on Saturday. Ray called their match on Friday boring, but their match on Saturday was anything but.

"Kyle and Jesse did more wrestling in the first period of that match than they did on all of Friday's," Ray said.

Fisher grabbed an early lead in the first period and was trying to ride Juarez out for the win, but Juarez picked up a reversal and was able to score a rare pin on Fisher.

"Kyle was riding to be content instead of riding him out to be in control," Ray said. "Jesse caught him at the right moment and capitalized."

Caleb Schaeffer picked up a pair of wins over Dan Shaw on the weekend, including a pin on Saturday. Stryder Davis also looked strong at 157 with two wins over true freshman Dale Seley.

"Stryder looked very strong, but Dale wrestled him very tough for it being his first college matches," Ray said.

In other matches, freshman Jason Harrington defeated Usman Khan at 125 pounds, shaking off a 6-1 loss to Andy Thompson on Friday. Anthony Haukenberry picked up a pair of wins at 149, defeating Lance Nelson twice. At 174, David Waters pinned Brian Fritchman on Friday, but was beaten by Luke Heuberger 8-5. Heavyweight Chase Gormley split a pair of matches against Matt Carter.

Overall, Ray was very pleased with the weekend. He especially liked the improvement from Friday night to Saturday night.

"It showed how coachable these kids are," Ray said. "They learned from their own mistakes and corrected them. It was a great success from a coaching standpoint. These were some of the best intrasquad teams we've put on the mat."

Northern will be in action this weekend with a dual against Sitanik-Huron University on Friday and with the Northwest College Invitational on Saturday.

"We need to work on some individual technical things for this weekend," Ray said. "And they really have to make an effort to start controlling their weight."
