McGuane will speak at Heritage Center

A well-respected Montana author is the next featured speaker at the Heritage Center Celebrity Luncheon series.

Tom McGuane, who ranches near McLeod in the vicinity of Big Timber, will speak following lunch Wednesday.

McGuane was born in Wyandotte, Mich., in 1939. He received a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in 1962 and a master's from Yale University in 1965. He was a Wallace Stegner Fellow in creative writing at Stanford in 1966 and was given an honorary doctorate from Montana State University in 1993.

He began his writing career with the publication of "The Sporting Club" in 1969. The novel tells the story of two rivals reunited at a hunting club, with pranks turning eventually into guerrilla warfare on the club's hunting reserve.

The book was made into a movie in 1972, with actors Robert Fields, Linda Blair and Jack Warden.

McGuane has followed with eight more novels, a series of sports essays, some of which were compiled into "The Longest Silence," a collection of essays on fly-fishing, and short stories.

McGuane wrote four screenplays for motion pictures, including "Rancho Deluxe," released in 1975 and starring Jeff Bridges, Sam Waterston and Elizabeth Ashley; "The Missouri Breaks," released in 1976 and starring Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson; and "Tom Horn," released in 1980 and starring Steve McQueen, Richard Farnsworth and Slim Pickens.

He also directed a movie made from one of his books, "92 in the Shade," released in 1976 and starring Peter Fonda, Warren Oates, Burgess Meredith, Harry Dean Stanton and Margot Kidder, his wife at the time.

The author moved to Montana in 1968, and has been involved in ranching ever since. Many of his novels, including "The Cadence of Grass," published in 2002, are set in Montana.

McGuane lives on his ranch with his wife, Laurie, sister of singer Jimmy Buffett. His activities outside of writing include raising horses, competing in steer roping and cutting horse competitions, and flyfishing.

The luncheon starts at noon in the third-floor courtroom of the Heritage Center, with a lunch of hot turkey sandwiches with mashed potatoes and cranberries served by Super Ice Cream.

The luncheon costs $15. People are asked to call 265-7258 to make reservations.
