Chinook repeats as 2B tourney champs

The Chinook Sugarbeeters had a tough road to the District 2B volleyball championship this past weekend in Glasgow. But the Beeters were up to the task and they met all challenges, capturing the district title for the second straight year.

The Beeters defeated the host Glasgow Scotties for the second time in as many days to keep the district title in Chinook.

In Saturday night's championship match, the Beeters fell behind two games to none before rallying to capture three straight games by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 15-11. Kelsey Crampton led the way for the Beeters in the championship match with 11 kills, and Whitney Lybeck added three blocks.

The Beeters had also downed the Scotties on Friday in the semifinals in four tightly contested games. The Scotties then rebounded to knock off Malta on Saturday afternoon to get a rematch with Chinook for the title .

"We started off pretty slow in the last match," said Chinook head coach Jay Eslick. "Glasgow was just coming off two straight huge wins over Malta and they were really playing well. So that caught us off guard a little bit.

"But the girls did a great job of staying focused and I was real pleased that we could come back from a 2-0 deficit and win the match."

Including the two wins over the Scotties, Chinook also grabbed a quarterfinals victory over Wolf Point on Thursday night. The Beeters downed the Wolves by scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-8. Whitney Lybeck led the way with 10 kills and three aces, and Shaylan Haugen added 10 kills.

"Overall we played well and executed our game plan in every single match," Eslick said. "Our girls up front, like Whitney Lybeck, Georgia Barber, Kelsey Crampton and Kayla Erskine, were all just dominant at the net. We also served really well as a team, so I am very happy with the way the team played throughout the weekend."

Chinook, Glasgow, Malta and Wolf Point will move on to Thursday's Northeast B divisional tournament in Malta. The Beeters will open up divisional play with a match against Fairfield on Thursday afternoon.
