RUSSELL OBERG obituary

Russell F. Oberg, 87, of Havre died of natural causes at his home on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003.

A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Holland and Bonine Chapel with the Rev. Rowlie Hutton officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland

Cemetery. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the Eagles Club.

Russell was born in Chinook on Oct. 21, 1916. to Paul and Regna Oberg, Russell attended school in Zurich and graduated from Chinook High School in 1935.

He married Leona Claridge on Oct. 20, 1939. They lived and worked in the valley and farmed a place of their own east of Zurich. Later they owned and operated the Zurich Cash Store along with other businesses.

Russell began his career with the Great Northern Railway in the track operations and maintenance division in 1950. He and Leona moved to Havre with their family in 1953, where he continued to work for the Great Northern and Burlington Northern railways. Russell retired from the BN in 1978. He then had more time to enjoy working in their yard and garden. In 1994, he and Leona were recipients of the Yard of the Month Award.

Russell was well known for his kind, generous and caring nature. He enjoyed his garden, had a keen interest in politics, and especially enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors. In September, Russell's extended family, along with a host of friends, gathered at the family home for a memorable picnic.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees.

Russell was preceded in death by his wife, Leona, and his parents.

Survivors include his sons, Rod (Karen) Oberg of Epping, N.D., Dr. Steven (Bev) Oberg of Sparks, Nevada, and Danny Oberg of Lacey, Wash., five grandchildren; brother, Sterling Oberg of Seattle, Wash.; sisters, Virginia (Louie) D'Hooge of Havre and Lois (Val) Konecny of Shoreline, Wash.; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends, including Kelly and Judy Jones and Kenny Jones of Havre.

Memorials may be made the City of Havre Parks and Recreation Department for improvements to S Curve City Park or to the donor's choice.
