Dutton-Brady steals Northern C title

CHESTER - The Dutton-Brady Diamondbacks had everything working against them going into the championship match of the Northern C divisional volleyball tournament. The D-Backs had already lost to their opponent - the Chester Coyotes - earlier in the day, they had to beat the Coyotes twice to win the championship and they had to do all that on Chester's home floor Saturday night.

The Diamondbacks didn't let any of those factors stop them as they knocked off Chester 21-25, 25-15, 16-25, 25-19, 15-1 and 25-20, 25-23, 26-24 to take the Northern C title and advance to next weekend's Class C state tournament in Lewistown. By finishing in the top two, the Coyotes also garnered an invitation to the state tournament.

Chester looked to be in the proverbial driver's seat on Saturday morning with a 8-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-20 win over Dutton-Brady in the first semifinal match. The Coyotes shook off a brutal first game and rallied to win three straight games to move into the championship match. Mary DeVries had nine kills, six digs and 11 blocks to lead Chester. JoAnna LaSorte also had solid match with 18 assists, seven digs and two aces.

Dutton-Brady was led by Bri Smith with 12 kills and Missy Wells with nine kills and 11 blocks.

The Diamondbacks shook off the loss to defeat Valier in the second semifinal 22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-14 to move into the championship match as Smith notched 17 kills and Wells added 12 in the win.

In the first championship, Chester looked to be well on its way to the title taking the first game 25-21. But the Coyotes' passing broke down and the Diamondbacks hitting got going as Dutton-Brady took games two and three. Chester rallied in game four as the emotions and crowd propelled them to a 25-19 win.

But after working so hard to force a deciding fifth game, Chester's communication and passing broke down.

Dutton-Brady reeled off nine unanswered points to open the game. Chester finally got on the board with a DeVries kill, but the deficit was too great. The Diamondbacks got a pair of kills from Wells to finish off Chester 15-1 and force a second championship match.

Wells finished with a match-high 12 kills and 12 blocks while Stephanie Beckham had 15 digs and four aces. Chester was led by DeVries with 14 digs, nine blocks and seven kills. Courtney Fraser added eight kills and 11 digs in the loss.

After getting that far, Dutton-Brady wasn't going to be denied. The Diamondbacks continued their strong hitting and capitalized on several Chester errors to win a tightly contested match.

Chester had opportunities throughout the match, even after dropping the first two games, the Coyotes led game three, 15-3.

But Dutton-Brady rallied and Ashlee Johnson's block knotted the game at 22. A kill and block from Brianna Smith gave the Diamondbacks the lead and Stephanie Beckham's tip clinched the match

Wells and Smith combined for 13 kills, while Amanda Reeves dished out 14 assists and picked up nine digs. Fraser led Chester with nine kills and 10 digs while Keyla Wendland added seven kills and 10 assists.

The rest of the Northern C tournament was not kind to District 6C teams. The Blue Sky Eagles were the only other District 6C team to pick up a win in the tournament.

After falling to Valier in their opening game, the Eagles rebounded to knock off conference foe Big Sandy 24-26, 25-19, 25-13, 25-18 on Friday morning in loser-out action. Kaila Warren had 13 kills, eight aces and seven digs to lead Blue Sky. Raynee Pearson had 14 kills and seven blocks for the Pioneers. Blue Sky was eliminated on Friday night by the Belt Huskies 26-24, 18-25, 25-14, 25-15. Lindsay Anderson had eight blocks, eight digs and four aces to lead the Eagles.
