Sugarbeeters finish fourth at State B volleyball tournament

The Chinook Sugarbeeters capped off an impressive 2003 volleyball season with a fourth-place finish at this weekend's Class B state volleyball tournament at the Shrine Auditorium in Billings.

The Beeters were eliminated from play in Friday night's fourth-place match by the team they opened the tournament with a win over, the Manhattan Christian Eagles. The Eagles then upset Townsend before falling in the state championship match to undefeated Huntley Project.

Chinook opened the 2003 state tournament with a four-game win over the Eagles, who finished third at the Southern C divisional tournament, by scores of 25-23, 25-22, 11-25 and 25-23.

Kayla Erskine led the way for the Beeters with eight kills. Whitney Lybeck also had a fine all-around match with seven kills, three blocks and two aces.

The win over Manhattan Christian moved Chinook into Thursday night's winner's bracket, where the Beeters were soundly defeated by heavily favored Townsend in three games. Townsend knocked off the Beeters by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-20.

Lybeck had another fine match with six kills and three blocks.

On Friday afternoon, the Beeters moved into loser-out action and continued to advance as they downed the Eureka Lions in four games. Chinook dropped the opening game of the match 18-25 before rallying to win the next three games by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-9. Georgia Barber came up big for the Beeters with 13 kills and three blocks and Andrea Eslick added a match-high five aces.

The win over the Lions moved Chinook into Friday night's fourth-place match where they met Manhattan Christian for the second time in as many days. And this time the Eagles prevailed by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-23. Barber was again solid for the Beeters with nine kills and a block.
