JAMES BURCHARD obituary

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. - James R. "Jim" Burchard, 76, of Port Orchard died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at his residence in Port Orchard.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rill Chapel's Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at The Church of Jesus

Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1550 Hoover Ave., in Port Orchard. Interment will be at Sunset Lane Memorial Park in Port Orchard.

He was born April 12, 1927, to Charles and Anna Mae (Dubois) Burchard at Havre. He attended Havre High School and Northern Montana College.

On June 15, 1952, he married June Scott in Fort Benton. He served with the Marine Corps during World War II. He received his GED while in the Marine Corps.

After his military service, he was employed by Great Northern Railway for 20 years. He retired as a pipe fitter and sheet metal mechanic. He went on to work at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1966 as a pipefitter and retired as a reactor plant general foreman in 1981.

A devoted family man who enjoyed his children and grandchildren, Burchard built three family homes. In addition, he and his wife owned and operated family grocery stores in Manchester and Olalla.

Burchard was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and assumed leadership roles within the church. He also was instrumental in the original construction of the second phase of the LDS church on Hoover Avenue in Port Orchard.

Survivors include his wife, June Burchard; sons, Bryant Burchard, Reed (Cheryl) Burchard and Chuck Burchard, all of Port Orchard; daughter, Becki (Ron) Kabelac of Port Orchard; daughter-in-law, Ellura Duplex of Evans, Colo .; brothers, Sam Burchard of California, Vern Burchard of Havre and Gary Burchard of Spokane; sisters, Alyce Matson, Peggy Cloke and Mary Kelly, all of Spokane, Doreen Gault of Havre and Evelyn Hoffman of Missoula; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Burchard, and three grandchildren, Jason, Thomas and Shalynn.
