HHS swimmers have strong showing in first meet of the season

When your times in the first meet of this season are better than your times in the last meet of last season, there's definitely a reason to be happy.

Havre High swim coach Chris Inman was very happy following her teams' performance in the first meet of the season at the Flathead Invitational.

The Havre High girls finished a strong second behind perennial Class AA powerhouse Kalispell with 360 total team points. Despite limited numbers, the Havre High boys finished in fourth place with 279 total team points.

"I saw many good things," Inman said. "We're very young, but we have quite a lot of talent. The kids swam really well. Some of our times were faster in this meet than they were at last year's state meet."

Individually, the Pony girls got solid performances from their upperclassmen. Seniors Kasie Teske, Danielle Barton and Gwen Porter and junior Rachel Hansen all placed in the top six individually. Teske grabbed a second- place finish in the 50 butterfly and fourth place in the 50 freestyle. Barton picked up a fifth in the 50 backstroke while Porter was sixth in the 200 freestyle and 50 breastroke. Hansen was fifth in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle.

In the girls relays, the team of Barton, Porter, Teske and Hansen finished fifth in the 200 medley relay and second in the 200 freestyle relay. In the 400 freestyle relay, Brittnee Zimmer, Katie Hartman, Emily Kostelecky and Gen Geda placed fifth.

For the Blue Pony boys, junior Scott Robinson was solid with a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle and third-place finish in the 50 butterfly. Also placing in the 50 freestyle were sophomores Sam Simpson and Kevin Friede in fifth and sixth, respectively. Friede picked up a second place in the 50 backstroke, while Ryan Kinholt and Anthony McLain finished third and fourth. In the 50 backstroke, Bryden Vukasin and Jordan Croft placed fifth and sixth.

The relay team of Kinholt, Vukasin, Robinson and Friede finished fourth in the 200 medley relay, while Croft, Friede, Kinholt and Robinson teamed to finish third in the 200 freestyle relay. In the 400 freestyle relay, Croft, Simpson, McLain and Scott Vigliotti finished third.
