Big Sandy rolls to 3-0 record to start season; Box Elder perfect at NAC

The boys high school hoops season opened with a multitude of games across the Hi-Line this weekend. Included in the action were tournaments in Plentywood, Big Sandy, Centerville, as well as the Native American Classic in Havre.

Thursday night the Chinook Sugarbeeters opened their season by hosting the Class B state champion Cut Bank Wolves. The young Beeters were able to keep things close with the Wolves in the first half, but ended up falling 72-50.

After a fast-paced first quarter in which the Wolves held a 24-18 lead, the Beeters reeled off 11-unanswered points in the second stanza to pull within two points at the half, 37-35. However, the third quarter did Chinook in as the Beeters managed only three points in eight minutes and ended up being outscored 35-15 in the second half.

Dillon Davies led the Beeters with 13 points and Adam Hayes added 12. Keithan Gregg led four Wolves in double figures with a game-high 18 points.

Thursday night also saw the Big Sandy Pioneers open their season with a win over Highwood on the opening night of the Big Sandy Invitational. The Pioneers ripped the Mountaineers 72-43.

The Pioneers got 26 points from Gage Brumwell and another 20 from Jay Jamieson, including four three-pointers.

On Friday night, Chinook returned to the floor in Plentywood to take on the host Wildcats at the Plentywood Tournament. For the second straight night the Beeters fell victim to a tough third quarter as Plentywood outscored the Beeters 24-11 to pull away for a 70-54 win.

Marcus Birky led the way for the Beeters with 10 points and Kelan Broadhead and Dillon Davies chipped in with nine points apiece.

In other Class B action, the Harlem Wildcats were downed by St. Labre by a score of 73-67.

Ben Carrywater paced Harlem in the loss with 22 points and Jim Kennedy added 12. St. Labre got a game-high 42 points from Dane Fischer.

In Centerville a pair of Hi-Line teams were action on Friday night. The J-I Rams picked up a win over the Treasure State 68-35 and the Blue Sky Eagles were dropped by the Great Falls Central Titans 64-32.

The Rams were paced in their win by the duo of Zach Ramberg and Craig Miller. The two poured in 20 points apiece, while Brent Pimley added 12 points.

Meanwhile, Blue Sky was plagued by major shooting woes in the first half, scoring just four points in each of the first two quarters. The Eagles were led by Levi Wendland's eight points and Roald Aageson chipped in with seven points.

Three District 9C teams were in action Friday night at the Big Sandy tournament. The KG KouGars opened their season with a 57-27 blowout loss at the hands of 7C power Judith Gap. KG struggled to find offense early on, scoring just 10 points in the first half and managing only two points in the third quarter. The KouGars were paced by Darby Donoven's team-high 11 points.

The host Big Sandy Pioneers continued to look impressive early as they downed the Saco Panthers 72-51 on Friday night.

Big Sandy had three players in double figures with Brumwell leading all scorers with 30 points . The Pioneers also got 18 points from Jamieson and 13 from Mason Ophus in the win.

The Turner Tornadoes opened up their season in Big Sandy with a 62-45 thumping of Dodson.

Friday night also saw a pair of District 9C teams pick up wins at the Native American Classic at the MSU-Northern gymnasium in Havre.

The Rocky Boy Stars got their season off to a good start by taking care of the Browning junior varsity team, 84-75.

Rocky Boy got a game-high 24 points from Ivan Whitford, while Eric Watson chipped in with 21 points. In all, the Stars had five players score in double figures.

Box Elder also picked up an easy win in Havre on Friday night by routing Frazer 87-62. Leading by two points after the first quarter, the Bears reeled off 28 points in the next eight minutes to put Frazer away for good.

Tim Rosette and Kyle Parker paced the Bears, scoring 17 and 15 points, respectively. Neal Rosette also had 12 points and James Burns added 10 in the win.

For the third straight night, Chinook was unable to pick up its first win of the season. The Beeters fell to District 2B rival Wolf Point, 79-62.

Dillon Davies scored a game-high 22 points for the Beeters and Adam Hayes added 17 in the loss.

Saturday night saw the Chester Coyotes open their 2003-04 campaign with an impressive 67-49 win over District 1B Shelby in Chester.

The Coyotes built a comfortable 36-24 lead at intermission and were never really threatened in the second half. Patrick Walstad led three Coyotes in double figures with 14 points. Travis Van Dyke and Mitch Violett scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Centerville was not kind to the Hi-Line teams participating in the final night of its preseason tourney as both the J-I Rams and Blue Sky Eagles were beaten.

J-I was routed by the Great Falls High sophomore squad by a score 71-56, while the Eagles lost a close battle with the host Centerville Miners 50-42.

Meanwhile, the Big Sandy Pioneers continued to steamroll through their own invitational tournament Saturday night as they pounded the Judith Gap Rangers, 71-56.

Jamieson and Brumwell did the bulk of the scoring for the Pioneers. Jamieson led the way with a game-high 22 points while Brumwell poured in 21. Mason Ophus added 15 points in the win.

Also in Big Sandy, KG bounced back from its Friday night loss to the Rangers by knocking off Winifred Saturday night, 54-51 while Turner was defeated by Highwood, 51-40.

In Havre, the Box Elder Bears wrapped up an undefeated run at the Native American Classic on Saturday night as they edged District 10C rival Heart Butte, 81-70.

The Bears trailed by four points going into the final stanza, but scored 25 points in the final eight minutes to edge the Warriors by 11 points. Box Elder got 21 points from James Burns and 20 from Tim Rosette in the win. Neal Rosette added 16 points.

Meanwhile, the Rocky Boy Stars were downed by Dodson Saturday night, 54-48, in overtime. The two teams were tied at 45-45 after regulation, but Dodson outscored the Stars 8-3 in the extra period.

Rocky Boy was paced by Eric Watson's 17 points and A.J. The Boy chipped in with 10 points.
