KouGars, Rams finish weekend 2-0, Chester girls knock off Class B Shelby

The opening weekend was a tough one for Hi-Line girls basketball teams with several squads facing very good competition at a variety of non-conference tournaments.

The J-I Rams and KG KouGars finished the weekend with 2-0 records while the Chester Coyotes knocked off Class B Shelby to highlight the weekend.

J-I had a solid weekend at the Centerville Invitational, trouncing Treasure State Academy High School 68-10 on Friday night and Great Falls Central 51-31 on Saturday night.

Freshman Hannay Pimley scored 18 points and senior Megan Herdina added 13 in the win against Treasure State. The duo combined for 31 points to lead the Rams against Great Falls Central.

KG opened its season with a hardfought 55-48 win over Judith Gap on Friday night at the Big Sandy Invitational. Cady Arfiin scored a game-high 27 points, including three three-pointers, while Casie Toner chipped in with 14 points. The KouGars picked up their second win on Saturday night with a 45-37 win over District 8C foe Winifred. Arifin led KG with 12 points, while Toner and freshman Kate Vosen added 11 points each in the win.

The tournament was a little tougher on the host Big Sandy Pioneers, who finished with a 1-2 record. After losing on Thursday night to Highwood 52-29, the Pioneers rallied for a 56-43 win over Saco on Friday. Senior Ashley Goodian scored a game-high 23 points to lead Big Sandy, while Shalayna Pearson added 11 in the win.

Big Sandy couldn't keep the momentum going on Saturday, losing a close game to Judith Gap, 56-52. Big Sandy took a 42-39 lead into the fourth quarter, but Judith Gap outscored them 17-10 in the fourth quarter to steal the win.

Goodian had another solid game with 26 points, while Naomi Williams added 15 points in the loss.

The Blue Sky Eagles split their two games at the Centerville Invitational. Blue Sky walloped Great Falls Central 65-34 on Friday night as junior Kaila Warren led the way with 18 points. Senior Lindsay Anderson and junior Ashely Gatzemeier added 10 points each.

Saturday night, District 7C favorite Winnett dropped the Eagles, 53-36 as three-point first quarter proved costly for Blue Sky.

Warren and Anderson scored 10 points each in the loss.

The Rocky Boy Morning Stars and Box Elder Bears opened their seasons with wins on Friday night in the Native American Classic at the MSU-Northern gymnasium. Rocky Boy defeated the Browning junior varsity squad 60-47 as Marty Stiffarm led three players in double figures with 15 points. Deidre Sunchild added 11 points and Tori Belcourt chipped in with 10 in the win.

Box Elder got a game-high 19 points from Shaneen Raining Bird in a 72-34 trouncing of Frazer. Gerri Eagleman added 14 points while Tasha Parisian and Codi Raining Bird chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Saturday night was not as kind to the Morning Stars and Bears as both picked up their first losses of the season. Dodson dumped Rocky Boy 69-56 as Derene Bear led four Dodson players in double figures with 20 points. Chelsey St. Pierre led Rocky Boy with a team-high 20 points.

District 10C Heart Butte edged Box Elder 53-49, despite a furious fourth-quarter rally from the Bears. Raining Bird was the only player in double figures for Box Elder, scoring a game-high 18 points.

In Class B action, the Chinook Sugarbeeters split a pair of games at the Plentywood Inivitational tournament. The Beeters knocked off the host Wildcats 47-37. Kelsey Crampton scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Beeters, who lost starter Whitney Lybeck early in the game with an ankle injury.

Lybeck returned on Saturday night, but couldn't help Chinook overcome perennial 2B power Wolf Point as the Wolves picked up a 45-35 win. Lybeck and Crampton led Chinook with seven points each, while Wolf Point got 14 points from Abby Douglas and 12 from Megan Zilkoski.

The Harlem Wildcats dropped their opening games of the season with a pair of losses to St. Labre and Forsyth. Olivia Main scored a game-high 19 points in a 59-43 loss to St. Labre on Friday. On Saturday, Forsyth defeated Harlem 74-41. Main led Harlem with 13 points, while Kayla Horn added 11.
