LEROY WINDYBOY obituary

ROCKY BOY - LeRoy Charles "Dakota" Windyboy, whose Indian names were Piyesis and Wahpos, 53, of Rocky Boy died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at a Havre hospital after a long illness.

A wake service began Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Rocky Boy Catholic Church. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Rocky Boy Catholic Church with the Rev. Pete Guthneck officiating and Marvin Russette performing the Indian traditions. Burial will be held after the services at the Rocky Boy Cemetery.

LeRoy was born on Jan. 14, 1950, to Roger and Rosie (Gopher) Windyboy at Rocky Boy. He attended schools in Rocky Boy and junior high in Havre. LeRoy excelled in the sport of wrestling. He attended high school in Flandreau, S.D., where he was a wrestling champion. He graduated from Flandreau and returned to Rocky Boy. He attended Stone Child College and studied computer science. He then went to work as a welder in Spokane, working on large tractors.

LeRoy was a traditional Indian singer and won many championships in powwows and 49s. He was a spiritual singer at sundance and giveaway dances.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Rosie (Gopher) Windyboy; sisters, Judy and Alma; and brothers, Harold, Arnold and Russell.

Survivors include Wilma Windyboy, Ronald Windyboy, Delma Windyboy and Roger Windyboy Jr., all of Rocky Boy, Andrew Helen Windyboy of Nevada, Raymond Windyboy of Havre; children, Lorena Revis of Browning, LeRoy C. Windyboy Jr. of Yakima, Wash., Angel Little Plume of Browning, Olivia Gopher of Rocky Boy and Kenneth Charles Windyboy of Lapwai, Idaho.

Arrangements are under the direction of Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.
